Did You Know?
YOR Rescue Watercraft (RWC) operators undergo rigorous RWC training every season to ensure we are fully prepared when seconds matter.
York Ocean Rescue lifeguards train with Safety Third Training, led by renowned instructor/lifeguard/firefighter/EMT Bob Selfridge, using the curriculum developed by the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association (HLA). HLA’s program is widely regarded as one of the highest-fidelity RWC training standards in the world, built by professional ocean lifeguards who operate rescue watercraft daily in some of the most demanding surf conditions on the planet.
This training is intentionally intense. Guards spend long days on the water practicing surf launches, landings, operator/rescuer coordination, victim retrievals, and high-pressure scenario-based rescues designed to replicate real emergencies. The focus is on repetition, decision-making under pressure, and seamless teamwork.
The total training hours and practical components meet the standards outlined by the United States Lifesaving Association (USLA) for RWC certification, ensuring our operators train to nationally recognized professional benchmarks.
Last year’s training also brought together multiple lifeguard agencies and fire department personnel, creating a collaborative environment that strengthened regional response capabilities and allowed teams to train together in realistic, inter-agency rescue scenarios.
We’re incredibly grateful to work with Safety Third Training and Bob Selfridge, whose commitment to the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association’s proven curriculum keeps the focus exactly where it should be: realistic training, high standards, and preparing lifeguards to perform when it matters most.
We’re excited to welcome Bob and his team back this summer for another preseason training, continuing a partnership that helps ensure our guards are ready for whatever the ocean brings.
When it comes to RWC training, we’re proud to learn from the best in the business.
