West York Borough's Zoning Hearing Board has unanimously approved a new 70-unit housing development for young professionals, expected to generate significant revenue. The development will be built on West Market Street by a local developer who has completed several projects in the borough. Chief Administrator Shawn Mauck said, "This development is a rare opportunity for the borough to grow through new construction, reusing existing infrastructure. It's a big deal and positive for borough residents, as it produces substantial new revenue and sets the stage for future redevelopment on Market Street and throughout West York Borough. We are serious about building a beautiful, walkable downtown filled with new and existing businesses, creating opportunities, jobs, and economic growth."

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
West York Borough Secures $1.16 Million PennDOT Grant for Major Pedestrian Safety Improvements
WEST YORK, PA — West York Borough Chief Administrator Shawn Mauck is proud to announce that the Borough has been selected as a recipient of the Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside (TASA) grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). The Borough has been awarded $1.16 million to implement a comprehensive suite of infrastructure and safety enhancements.
The grant aims to revitalize local corridors by addressing critical accessibility needs and pedestrian hazards. These funds are earmarked for a series of high-impact projects designed to modernize the Borough’s streetscape and protect its residents.
Key Project Highlights:
ADA Compliance: Full replacement of existing sidewalks and the installation of modern ADA-compliant ramps to ensure accessibility for all community members.
Enhanced Crosswalks: Upgrades to pedestrian crosswalks at vital intersections to improve visibility and safety.
RRFB Installation: The introduction of a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) across one of the Borough’s high-traffic lanes. This technology is a proven safety measure that significantly increases motorist yield rates at pedestrian crossings.
"Securing this $1.16 million investment is a transformative win for West York," said Chief Administrator Shawn Mauck. "By focusing on these specific safety improvements—from the RRFB to the ADA ramps—we are making our streets safer, more inclusive, and more walkable for every resident and visitor."

Award Amount: $1.16 Million
Sidewalks: 28,539 sq ft (Replacement/Installation)
Curb Ramps: 2,488 units
Crosswalks: 9 units
RRFB: 1 (Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon)

The TASA program is a federally funded initiative that supports projects defined as "transportation alternatives," including pedestrian and bicycle facilities. This grant allows West York Borough to move forward with these essential upgrades while leveraging state and federal resources to improve the local quality of life.
Work on these improvements is expected to begin following the standard PennDOT project review and bidding process.
