How We Began
The Greater Williamsburg Trauma-Informed Community Network (GW-TICN) began in the summer of 2019 when a diverse group of representatives from public organizations in the Greater Williamsburg area came together to discuss how to spread awareness of the impact of trauma on the individuals and families we serve.
The goal of a TICN (as supported by FACT) is to “leverage the science of adverse childhood experiences and trauma to build relationships, convene regularly, and advance a common agenda around resilience”. In August 2019, the GW-TICN sponsored a screening of the documentary, “Resilience”, to over 120 community professionals, which also included an introductory training on trauma and resilience.
Guided by the framework established by the Family & Children’s Trust Fund (FACT) and the experience of over 20 TICNs across VA, the GW-TICN has now evolved to include representatives from many public and private community organizations serving individuals and families across the lifespan. These representatives meet monthly at the General Membership meetings to share ideas and resources, as well as plan future activities and initiatives.
In December 2019, a Steering Committee was formed, comprised of representatives from the local Departments of Social Services (James City County, Williamsburg, York/Poquoson), 9th District Court Services Unit, Colonial Behavioral Health, and the local school divisions in Williamsburg/James City County, York County, and Poquoson. The United Way of the VA Peninsula was invited to join in January 2020. Additional sub-committees were formed and began meeting in early 2020.
