Halloween Trick-or-Treating in Yorktown

Tips for everyone (drivers, parents, and residents) helping to ensure a safe Halloween in Yorktown. Halloween is one of those evenings when our neighborhoods come alive with families enjoying their community. Thank you for doing your part to make it a fun, welcoming, and safe evening for everyone.

FOR RESIDENTS HANDING OUT CANDY:
If you'd like to welcome trick-or-treaters to your home, please turn on your porch and exterior lights during trick-or-treating hours. This helps families easily identify participating homes.

If you're not participating or run out of candy, simply turn your porch lights off.

FOR FAMILIES HEADING OUT:
With so many children and families walking through our neighborhoods after dark, a little extra attention goes a long way.

• Be visible. Bring flashlights or glow sticks, and consider adding reflective materials to costumes and candy bags.

• Use sidewalks whenever available. If there isn't a sidewalk, walk facing oncoming traffic and stay as far from the roadway as practical.

• Cross carefully. Use intersections and marked crosswalks when possible. Look both ways, make eye contact with drivers, and avoid crossing between parked vehicles.

• Stay together. Younger children should be accompanied by a responsible adult. Establish a meeting place and expectations for older children going out with friends.

• Choose safe costumes. Make sure costumes don't obstruct vision or create tripping hazards, especially when walking near streets and curbs.

• Visit well-lit homes. Stick to familiar neighborhoods, approach homes with their porch lights on, and remain outside in view of a trusted adult.

• Check treats at home. Have an adult look through collected candy before children begin enjoying it.

FOR DRIVERS:
Please use extra caution throughout our neighborhoods all evening. Slow down, avoid distractions, and watch carefully for children who may be excited, difficult to see, or crossing unexpectedly. Be especially attentive near intersections, driveways, and parked vehicles.

The Town of Yorktown joins our community in grieving the loss of Yorktown High School senior Chris Wilson.

There are moments when words feel inadequate. This is one of them.

We hurt alongside the students, teammates, coaches, friends, family, teachers, and neighbors who are carrying an unimaginable loss.

In the stories being shared about Chris, there is a remarkable consistency. While many knew him as an athlete with significant accomplishments and potential, it is his character — his kindness, humility, respect, and care for others — that those closest to him speak about most.

His coach described him as a young man who “treated others with love and kindness,” showed up every day, worked hard, and never sought the attention that came with his success.

May we honor Chris by following that example.

May we treat one another with love and kindness. May we lead with integrity and humility. May we be generous with our support for those who are hurting, and may we take especially good care of the young people in our community as they grieve a friend and teammate.

Our hearts are with Chris’s family, his friends, his teammates and coaches, and the entire Yorktown school community.

We grieve with you. We remember Chris with you. Together, we will honor the life he lived and the impact he made on this community.

This is Yorktown. This is your town.

September 11, 2001 — Never Forget

Most of us remember exactly where we were and what we were doing on this day 25 years ago.

Today, we remember the nearly 3,000 innocent lives lost, the first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice, and the countless heroes who stepped forward to help in the aftermath.

We remember their courage, their sacrifice, and the unity our country showed in the face of tragedy.

Students are back in school, one of the most important traffic laws to remember is also one of the most misunderstood.

In Indiana, drivers must stop for a school bus whenever its red lights are flashing and the STOP arm is extended—even if you're traveling in the opposite direction. The only exception is when the roadways are separated by a true physical barrier, such as a grassy median, concrete barrier, or other divider designed to prevent crossing.

For Yorktown drivers, that means this is simple to remember:
• SR 32 between Andrews Road and Nebo Road is the only location in the Yorktown Community School District where opposing traffic is separated by a physical barrier.�• Everywhere else in town, traffic in both directions must stop for a stopped school bus.
A few extra seconds of patience helps protect students as they board and leave the bus. Before continuing through any bus stop, make sure the red lights have stopped flashing, the STOP arm has been retracted, and the bus has begun moving.
