Students are back in school, one of the most important traffic laws to remember is also one of the most misunderstood.

In Indiana, drivers must stop for a school bus whenever its red lights are flashing and the STOP arm is extended—even if you're traveling in the opposite direction. The only exception is when the roadways are separated by a true physical barrier, such as a grassy median, concrete barrier, or other divider designed to prevent crossing.

For Yorktown drivers, that means this is simple to remember:
• SR 32 between Andrews Road and Nebo Road is the only location in the Yorktown Community School District where opposing traffic is separated by a physical barrier.�• Everywhere else in town, traffic in both directions must stop for a stopped school bus.
A few extra seconds of patience helps protect students as they board and leave the bus. Before continuing through any bus stop, make sure the red lights have stopped flashing, the STOP arm has been retracted, and the bus has begun moving.

National Night Out is about more than a single evening of activities. It’s an opportunity to bring neighbors, families and our police officers together, strengthen relationships and build the kind of community connections that help keep Yorktown safe.

Thank you to everyone who came out and participated, and to the many volunteers who gave their time to make the evening possible.

A special thank you to Dee Freed with the Yorktown Police Department, who helps coordinate an incredible number of details, volunteers, organizations and partners to bring National Night Out together each year.

The Yorktown Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the individual shown in this video.

Between approximately 12:00a and 1:00a on August 20, two vehicles were stolen and at least five vehicle break-ins were reported in the area of Andrews Road and the Laurel Meadows neighborhood.

If you recognize this individual, noticed suspicious activity in the area during that time, or have security or doorbell camera footage that may be helpful, please contact the Yorktown Police Department.

Do not attempt to approach or confront the individual.

This is an active investigation. We encourage residents in the area to review any available camera footage and share this post with neighbors who may have additional information.

• FREE hot dogs, chips, and water
• Raffle giveaways including 8 bicycles with helmets, 5 scooters, and many more prizes
• FREE stuffed animals, police giveaways, Frisbees, balloons, and more
• FREE child ID kits • FREE child passenger safety inspections with certified car seat technicians
• Bike Rodeo with bike and helmet giveaways
• K-9 demonstration

Delaware County is now under an ORANGE Watch level travel advisory due to the ongoing flooding

This means that conditions are threatening to the safety of the public. During a "watch" local travel advisory, only essential travel, such as to and from work or in emergency situations, is recommended, and emergency action plans should be implemented by businesses, schools, government agencies and other organizations.
