Kendall County Sheriff’s Office to Begin Utilizing Body-Worn Cameras

Kendall County, IL (November 3, 2020, 9:45 AM)

The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office is implementing a new body-worn camera program, beginning November 3rd, 2020. Deputies will begin recording audio/visual interactions between Sheriff’s Office personnel and citizens. Body cameras are a valuable asset used to reinforce the Sheriff’s Office commitment to being transparent with the community. The use of body-worn camera technology will allow for accurately documenting events, actions, conditions, and statements made during law enforcement interactions, investigations, arrests, and critical incidents. This equipment will also enable Sheriff’s Office administrators to conduct periodic reviews of citizen contacts and aid in the investigation of citizen complaints.

The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office will utilize Getac body-worn cameras which offer full integration with our current in-squad video systems. The Sheriff’s Office has a policy in place to govern the deployment and use of the body-worn cameras.

Sheriff Dwight Baird said, “I support having our deputies wear body cameras. Although body-worn cameras don’t capture everything the deputy sees, it will be beneficial for court proceedings and will provide a clearer picture of what happened during an incident. Body-worn cameras are an important tool in fostering openness, transparency, and public trust. This body-worn camera program is another progressive step in our effort to better serve and protect residents through strengthening community and police relations.”

Domestic Violence in the Shadows of COVID-19 Video 13- Interview with DVRT Member Detective Stoch

State’s Attorney Weis and Cassandra Tanner-Miller of Colton’s Legacy sit down with DVRT Member and Kendall County Sheriff's Office Detective Kasey Stoch to discuss her role in supporting victims of domestic violence. Detective Stoch serves as the primary law enforcement contact for victims after a domestic violence arrest is made in Kendall County. She will attempt to make contact with victims within 24 hours of the incident and will remain in contact with victims and available to them throughout the duration of the case. Detective Stoch is trained in domestic violence response. She wants victims to know they have someone in law enforcement to provide them support, and she hopes to minimize the intimidation often felt by victims as they navigate the justice system.

Domestic Violence in the Shadows of COVID-19 Video 11- Domestic Violence Awareness Month

We are happy to welcome back Cassandra Tanner-Miller of Colton’s Legacy, after she took some time away to care for herself and process the psychological pain and emotional trauma surrounding the one-year anniversary of her son Colton's murder: the day she and her children suffered an unimaginable horror at the hands of her abuser and their lives were forever changed. She pushes through and reaches out in hopes she can prevent others from experiencing a similar, excruciating heartbreak.

State's Attorney Weis and Cassandra reexamine the initial, concrete steps victims can take to protect themselves and their families, and to be prepared to leave their abuser. They further discuss the resources available to victims, including the immediate, collaborative, support efforts of the Kendall County Domestic Violence Response Team.
