A campfire is enjoyable, but in Yosemite a single ember can cause serious damage.
- Check fire restrictions first: Rules change with conditions. Fire restrictions are currently in effect below 8,000 feet, with limited exceptions.
- Use only designated fire rings: Build fires only in established rings, grills, stoves, or approved fire areas.
- Follow the 5–10 PM rule: In Yosemite Valley and Hodgdon Meadow (May–September), fires are allowed only 5 PM–10 PM and must be fully out by 10 PM.
- Never leave your fire unattended: Stay with your fire at all times, wind can spread embers quickly.
- Keep fires small: Small fires are safer, easier to control, and easier to extinguish.
- Extinguish properly with water: Drown, stir, and repeat until cold. Never bury a fire! (coals can stay hot underground.)
- Make sure it’s cold before leaving: No heat, smoke, or embers should remain.
- Do not burn trash: Only burn approved firewood. Pack out all waste.
- Follow Wilderness fire rules: Fires are limited to existing rings below 9,600 feet and must be 100 feet from water and trails. Some areas prohibit fires entirely.
- When unsure, skip the fire: No fire is better than an unsafe one, especially in dry or windy conditions.
