SECOND MAN SENTENCED IN POLAND TWP. ASSAULT CASE

(Youngstown) The second man charged in a Poland Township assault case will now spend the next 2 to 3 years behind bars. James Sladewski was sentenced Friday afternoon in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. He and co-defendant Samuel Shipton were convicted last month in a bench trial before visiting Judge W. Wyatt McKay. Both had been indicted in connection with an incident at a home on Youngstown Pittsburgh Road back in October 2023.
Both men had been accused of beating their victim, causing what Judge McKay called “serious physical and psychological harm,” before calling 911 to report the incident as a drug overdose.
Earlier this month, Shipton was given a prison sentence of 6 to 9 years.
Prosecutor Lynn Maro credited the diligent work of the Poland Township Police as well as Assistants Daniel Yozwiak and John Fleet with bringing about a successful conviction and sentencing in this case.

Shavkat Abshukurov, 44, has been found guilty of two counts of R**e, two counts of Unlawful Sexual Conduct with a Minor, two counts of Gross Sexual Imposition, and one count of Kidnapping.

The verdict followed a three-day trial before Judge Maureen Sweeney. Assistant Prosecutors Kyle Hilles and Daniel Yozwiak successfully prosecuted the case.

In 2019, Abshukurov picked up the 13-year-old along North Bailey Road. He drove the victim to an area near Interstate 76, where he lured them into the rear of his truck and r***d them. Abshukurov later dropped the victim off at a nearby truck stop. The Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office responded and ensured the child was taken to a hospital for treatment. Following an investigation, Abshukurov was arrested and charged.

Abshukurov will be sentenced at a later date.

Stay safe and enjoy your time at the Fair!

As the opening of the 180th Annual Canfield Fair approaches, Mahoning County Sheriff Jerry Greene would like to offer some common sense suggestions to help keep your family safe at the Fair.

- Before leaving home, dress the kids in bright colors so they can be easily seen in a crowd.

- Take fresh photos of your children with your cell phone before entering the Fairgrounds that depict what they’re wearing and their physical features in case they get separated.

- For younger children, write your phone number on a piece of paper and stick in one of their pockets.

- For older children, instruct them to always use the “buddy system” and establish check-in times.

- Avoid walking through crowds with your head down, scrolling on your cell phone. Please be mindful of your surroundings.

- Choose clear physical landmarks as gathering points in case family members get lost or separated.

- Never leave beverages unattended at social venues or eating areas.

- Alert Sheriff’s Deputies or Fair Police right away if you spot a dangerous situation.

Laird Bruner will spend the next 59 months in prison following his sentencing Monday afternoon in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. Bruner, 43, of Boardman, had entered guilty pleas to felony charges of Aggravated Vehicular Homicide and Failure to Stop After an Accident in July.

He had been indicted in the crash that claimed the life of 53-year-old Joseph Novacich of Youngstown as he was walking along Loveland Road on the city’s south side back in September of last year. At the time, authorities said Bruner stopped his SUV briefly after the crash, but quickly left the scene, only to be arrested days later.

Please slow down for our kids returning to school!

⚠For immediate release..⚠

Beginning Tuesday, September 1, 2026, the Youngstown School Zone Safety Initiative will resume for the 2026/2027 school year. Using the TrueBlue Single Beam per-lane LIDAR system, our school zones will be photo enforced on all school days until 6pm, when children are present or likely to be present, to slow drivers down in our school zones.

The school zone beacons will be flashing (blinking yellow) before, during and after arrival and dismissal times for each individual school. When the school zone beacons are flashing, the 20mph reduced speed will be enforced. When the beacons are not flashing, the regular speed limit will be enforced on school days until 6pm, meaning drivers can still receive a citation for exceeding the posted speed limit even when yellow lights are not flashing.
