We are hiring, and we would love to find the right people from right here in our community.

Mahoning Valley Community School has two openings on our team:

Long-Term Substitute Teacher. High school science experience preferred. If you have a background in science and a heart for working with students who thrive on a second chance, we want to hear from you.

Instructional Assistant. Support our teachers and work directly with students in small classes where you get to know every one of them by name.

If you have ever wanted work that actually matters, this is it. Our students are ages 14 to 21, our classes are small, and our staff show up every day for young people who need someone in their corner. You would be joining a team that finishes strong together.

Interested? Send your resume to Dr. Jennifer Merritt at [email protected]

Please share this post with anyone you know who would be a great fit. The right person might be one share away.

You are invited, and so is everyone you know.

Mahoning Valley Community School is opening our doors for a Community Partner Open House, and this one is about showing you everything that comes with being part of MVCS. Come see the school, meet the staff, and connect with the partners who help our students and families thrive.

Thursday, August 27, 2026
3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Here is who will be in the building and ready to help:

Free backpack giveaway sponsored by the Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center, so students can start the year ready to go.

Small Wonders Childcare Center will be on site to enroll the children of students who need childcare, because your education should not have to wait for a babysitter.

Home and School Solutions will be here to talk about the behavioral health support offered right inside the school.

Akron Children's Hospital, our school medical health provider, will be on hand to answer your questions.

Our food pantry will be open. You can sign up or call ahead to receive items.

And our staff will be available the whole time to walk you through schedules, courses, and enrollment, whether you are ready to sign up or still deciding.

Whether you are a current family, a future student, or a neighbor who wants to see what we are about, we would love to see you there. Bring a friend, bring your questions, and come find out what finishing strong looks like at MVCS.

I DID IT!

Walk across that stage and say the words so many never think they will get to say.

That moment belongs to more people than you might guess. Maybe school stopped feeling possible somewhere along the way. Maybe life got heavy, the credits fell behind, and a diploma started to feel like something that happened for other people. If any of that sounds familiar, whether it is about you or someone you love, here is what we want you to know. That stage is still within reach.

At Mahoning Valley Community School, our students finish strong every single year. Small classes mean a teacher knows your name and notices when you need help. Free busing means getting there is not the thing that stops you. Free industry credentials mean you graduate with a diploma in one hand and real job skills in the other. Enrollment is free, and we welcome students ages 14 to 21.

Become part of MVCS, and you will finish strong too.

The walk across the stage. The cap. The gown. The cheering. The three words that carry the weight of everything it took to get there. I DID IT!

In a class of thirty five, a quiet student can go a whole week without being truly seen. In a small class, a teacher notices the blank page, the furrowed brow, the missed day. Our newest post breaks down how smaller classes lead to more attention, earlier help, stronger relationships, and the kind of follow through that keeps a student from slipping through the cracks.

At MVCS, small classes are not an extra. They are the foundation the whole school is built on.

In a small class, a teacher sees your student as a person, not a seat number. They catch the struggle early, they push when it matters, and they keep your child moving forward. That is what small by design means at MVCS. Now enrolling for the year ahead.

Our students come back on August 31, and one group is starting something special.

Under the guidance of science teacher Victoria Brodzenski, MVCS students in grades 9 through 12 will spend this year raising monarch butterflies and building a Nonviolence Reflection Butterfly Garden right here on Youngstown's southside. It brings together science, environmental stewardship, entrepreneurship, and a quiet message our community can always use more of: peace, healing, and positive change our young people build with their own hands.

Now we need our neighbors.

We are looking for community partners across Youngstown and Mahoning County. Individuals, businesses, nonprofits, colleges, artists, gardeners, environmental groups, and community leaders all have a place in this. Support can mean expertise, mentorship, materials, or just showing up to help with the work. Not all of it costs a dime, and every bit of it shows a young person that someone believes in them.

Want to help? Read the full story and find out how to get involved here:
https://www.mahoningvalleycommunityschool.org/news-and-updates/mvcs-butterfly-garden-community-partners

Please share this with anyone who cares about young people, pollinators, or the future of the southside. Word of mouth is how the right partners find us.

πŸ¦‹ One quick note: Victoria has stepped back from daily social media, so the best way to reach her is by email at [email protected] rather than the comments here.
