Village Residents,
On Thursday, May 14th, we kicked off a summer safety initiative when Mayor Ray Lewis, Captain Caraway, Officer Pesa, and I visited Roosevelt School to discuss e-bicycle and e-scooter safety with students in kindergarten through sixth grade. We met with the children in smaller groups to encourage questions and covered essential topics such as adhering to road laws, wearing helmets, and being mindful of surroundings. Additionally, we emphasized the importance of proper road etiquette, including coming to a complete stop at stop signs.
Thanks to Mayor Lewis for securing approximately 60 bike helmets through a state program, which will be distributed to children who do not have helmets or whose helmets no longer fit. Children interested in obtaining a helmet were instructed to have their parents contact the school district or police department. Furthermore, our officers will be paying close attention to e-scooter and e-bike riders this summer, enforcing safe riding practices and contacting parents if necessary.
In collaboration with the police department, Village administration and McDonald schools, The Village Creamery has launched a reward program to promote helmet use among children, providing 1,000 free ice cream cone vouchers. Officers will distribute vouchers to children wearing helmets, with each child eligible to receive up to one voucher per day.
McDonald Police Department's goal remains to keep our children safe and happy, and we are committed to achieving this objective
Professionally,
Police Chief Ryan Ronghi
