Recently, Woodmen life insurance company offered to host a fundraising campaign to help purchase equipment for our fire department. After considering the equipment that was needed, we decided on a boat that can be utilized for water rescue. We all know how flooding seems to be occurring more frequently, and we need to be able to respond quickly and with the proper equipment to mitigate the problems that come up. Not having a rescue boat causes us to have to wait for resources from neighboring towns to assist and only if they are not using their boats for their own citizens. The following link is for our donation page. Your help in this campaign is appreciated.

Thanks

From Dannielle Garcia : Three fire departments responded to a residential fire on Monday morning. Duson fire chief says only two water tankers worked and they had to call Acadia Parish for back up. Now, rural departments in Lafayette parish are sounding the alarm about aging equipment.

The Milton Fire Dept was able to knock down the fire in this duplex before it spread to the next Apartment. We appreciate the help from the other parish Fire Departments including Judice, Youngsville and Broussard and a couple of others who were turned around after the fire was under control. Hard to believe that LCG has $0 dollars for the parish contracts due out Nov 1. Pray that their emergency meeting goes well and they can source the necessary funding. Otherwise when we run out of money the Milton Fire Dept will close its doors. Please feel free to share.

Firefighters need your help now!!! Please come and educate yourself on a much needed funding for fire protection in the parish.

Update!!

Just leaving a briefing at the Lafayette Parish Emergency Ops Center to participate in the US National Weather Service Lake Charles Louisiana (NWS)10am update. Still anticipate the storm to be named TS Cindy some point later today. Expect 3-6” of heavy rainfall later today through Thursday with some localized heavier areas. Tides are expected to be 2-3’ above normal which will affect all drainage channels and complicate the rate that we can drain. NWS is not expecting the system to stall but please stay alert. All city staff are working and are staying informed. Self sandbag site will remain open at the Horse Farm on Iberia Street and the Parish’s site is on Fortune across from Fortune Hills. Please take the opportunity to make sure your ditches are cleared of any debris. Will share more as we receive updates.

7am Update...... Remember it doesn't matter where the "Cone of Uncertainty" is, just be prepared for anything!

As of 7 am Tuesday, Potential Tropical Cyclone Three still remains disorganized this morning. It still has the potential to become a tropical storm before landfall. A tropical storm warning is in effect from Cameron, LA to the mouth of the Pearl River, and a tropical storm watch is in effect from west of Cameron to High Island, TX. The forecast track has moved a little further to the west, with a landfall projection near the Texas/Louisiana state line early Thursday. The primary weather hazard with this system will be heavy rains. Three to five inches of rain is now expected across much of our region, with locally higher amounts of 10 inches possible in the stronger rainbands, especially Wednesday and Thursday. Tides will run one to two feet above normal, so that will hamper drainage for coastal counties and parishes. During high tides, water will be over the roads between Sabine Pass and Port Arthur, TX, Highway 82 in Cameron parish both east and west of Holly Beach, downtown Cameron, Pecan Island and Intracoastal City, Delcambre, Cypremort Point, and Burns Point. There will also be a small threat for tornadoes: today in lower Acadiana, Wednesday from Lake Charles to Lafayette south to the coast, and the entire region on Thursday. Winds will be gusting in the 40 to 55 mph range, especially near coastal regions, Wednesday into early Thursday.

Thank you for following us

I would like to start out by giving you an idea of where our funding comes from and how it is spent.
The Milton Fire Dept and all their parish departments sign an annual contract with the Lafayette Consolidated Government to provide fire protection to our respective districts and provide automatic mutual aid to its neighboring districts. This contract is for $40,000. We also receive donations from our letters that we send out to you.
LCG has been also giving another $20,000 to each department for capital improvements i.e. Fire Engines (avg. cost $400,000.)firefighter turn out gear ($4,000. each), SCBAs ( $6500. each). We are also allowed to use this for the mortgage for our Savoy Rd Station. THIS IS THE MONEY THE HAVE TAKEN. And they took it from next years budget with out any notification.

Here is what is some of the expenses were incurred to provide fire protection and fulfill terms of the $40,000 contract for 2015.

Insurance premium for the amount of coverage that LCG requires $31,547.00 (not a misprint)
$22,000.00 mortgage for station
$6365.00 Utilities
$4,199.00 Fuel
$6,800.00 repairs. Our newest pumper is 18 years old.
Along other misc expenses

As you can see the cost is high to provide you fire protection. Loosing this money will set us back and will eventually up our rating. When our rating goes up so does your insurance rates.

Our council members are William Theriot and Liz Hebert. William has given me his word that he will vote for the reinstatement. I will be meeting with Mrs. Hebert next week to see how she stands. Her email is on the LCG website if you would like to voice your concerns.

Will be back next week with an update.
