Founded in 1884, VHC-Yountville is the largest veterans’ home in the United States, offering residential accommodations with a wealth of recreational, social, and therapeutic activities for independent living. Some 1,100 aged or disabled veterans (both men and women) or World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Desert Storm, and Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom now live at the home. Future health care needs of veterans admitted to the Yountville Home at the Residential Care level are met by on-grounds facilities for Residential Care for the Elderly (RCFE), intermediate Care, Skilled Nursing Care, and a “Memory Care Center” for residents with various forms of dementia. General acute care is provided at Queen of the Valley Hospital in Napa, St. Helena, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in San Francisco. The Yountville Home is also a focal point for the Napa Valley Community with the 1,200 seat Lincoln Theater (home of the Napa Valley Symphony), 9-hole golf course, Recreational Vehicle (RV) park, Borman Field baseball stadium, bowling lanes, swimming pool, and a military Base Exchange branch store. All of these facilities are available for use by resident veterans at no additional cost. Additionally, the home offers services specifically for residents including a fitness center, a resident operated television station, auto hobby shop, a 35,000 volume library, creative arts center, and a multi-faith chapel.

Meet Home member Ed, a 102-year old WWII Pacific theater veteran! Born in 1924, Ed served in the U.S. Army — training in the tank corps — and later became a drummer for the regimental band.

Over his century-spanning life, Ed worked the boxing scene in St. Louis for 70 years, met legends like Muhammad Ali, Tony Zale, Rocky Graziano, Gene Fullmer, Archie Moore, and Henry Armstrong; worked as an inspector for the state of Missouri, operated his own radio station, and even once ran for state office.

Since coming to the Home about a year and a half ago, Ed likes to take it easy. He has good friends here, goes to activities, and socializes during dinner. He regularly sees his daughters and attends the Saturday movie showings. And even at 102 years old, Ed likes to work out in the gym, still a boxer at heart.

We are very excited to report that the Yountville Home's Skilled Nursing Facility just regained its “Five-Star” overall rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)! This is the highest possible rating a nursing home can receive!

Great Job, Yountville Team!🎉

CMS created the Five-Star Quality Rating System to help consumers and their families compare nursing homes more easily. The ratings for this determination are based on compliance with Medicare health and safety standards for registered nurse staffing, support staffing, quality measures, healthcare inspection, and overall quality. Home Administrator Holly Holtzen and Skilled Nursing Administrator Sophear Price are extremely proud of the entire Yountville Veterans Home team. Our staff's amazing teamwork and dedication to our home members led to this amazing honor.

Congratulations!

Meet Home member Richard, a talented artist and illustrator! Born and raised in San Francisco, he served in the U.S. Navy and has lived at the Home for just over a year.

A lifelong passion for illustrating. Richard likes to draw his fellow residents' dogs, landscapes at the Home, birds. and the cyclical nature of life (and death). All using colored pencils and ink.

Thank you so much for letting us into your workshop!
