Ypsilanti Historic District Commission

Ypsilanti Historic District Commission The Historic District Commission (HDC) guides development and renovation in the Historic District in order to safeguard Ypsilanti's historic built resources.

Founded in 1978, the Ypsilanti Historic District Commission oversees the exterior appearance of the Historic District. Any construction, demolition, renovation, restoration, or other activity that will alter the appearance of a structure in the District must first be discussed with and approved by the HDC.

Happy holidays! The Ypsilanti Historical Society notes that this group picture might have been taken at Arbeiter Hall at a Christmas party, likely around 1896. The Hall stood at 219 South Grove Street, where the Red Lion Apartments are now. Thanks to the Society for the photo!

Found this 1946 picture of Gaudy's Chocolate Shop at 24 N Washington, where The Downtown Style Station is now. In the 1950s or 60s, the building got modernized with red enameled steel panels and those are still in place today. George Gaudy had started a bakery on Michigan Ave by 1886, changed the name to Gaudy's Chocolate Shop, and moved the shop to N Washington in about 1914, where it remained until the 1940s. Visit https://aadl.org/ypsigleanings/13114 for more information. Thanks to the Ypsilanti Historical Society for the photo!

I wanted to share this cool, wintry picture of a Queen Anne house labeled "McIntire Farmhouse" from the Charles L. McIntire Collection of the Ypsilanti Historical Society's archives. A Charles L. McIntire was shown as living at 119 N Adams by the 1940 census when he was 74, but I don't know the location of this farmhouse. Thanks to the Ypsilanti Historical Society for the image!

Look at this house rolling down Michigan Avenue! The octagon house at 114 N River (the SOS Resource Center) was originally at 915 Washtenaw Avenue. In the 1960s, the house was threatened with demolition. People who cared about Ypsilanti's historic places, including Nat (Nathalie) Elliot Edmunds and Dr. William P. Edmunds, saved it and moved it. The move took place in May 1966. (Thanks to the Ypsilanti Historical Society for the photo.)
