If you are working around your property this weekend, remember that sparks from lawnmowers DO start wildfires. Here are a few tips to reduce the risk of starting a fire while mowing-

Mow before 10 a.m., but never when it’s windy or excessively dry.

Remember that lawn mowers are designed to mow lawns, not
w**ds or dry grass. Metal lawnmower blades striking rocks can create sparks and start fires.

Keep the exhaust system, spark arrester, and engine in proper working order and free of carbon buildup.

Use the recommended grade of fuel and don’t fill to the point of overflowing.

Forest Service offices will be closed today in observance of the holiday, but National Forests and Grasslands remain open for your enjoyment.

No fire restrictions are in place, however fireworks and exploding targets are always prohibited on National Forest lands. Visitors are reminded to follow campfire safety guidelines. https://smokeybear.com/campfire-safety

Firefighters are on scene of an approximately 1/2-acre fire just east of Seiad close to Highway 96.

Forward progress has been halted on the Ladd Fire and a hoselay has been installed around it.

Firefighters remain on scene constructing hand line and mopping up.

It’s drier than usual for this time of year in and around the . Please do your part to prevent wildfires! It only takes one spark from an unattended campfire or debris burn, a dragging trailer chain, or a lawnmower blade hitting a rock to start a wildfire.

Tick season is here!!!

As the weather warms up, ticks become more active in grassy, brushy, and wooded areas.

Protect yourself and your family when spending time outdoors:
• Wear long sleeves and pants when hiking or working outside
• Use EPA-registered insect repellent
• Check yourself, kids, and pets for ticks after being outdoors
• Shower soon after coming inside
• Remove ticks promptly with fine-tipped tweezers

Watch for symptoms after a tick bite, including fever, rash, fatigue, headaches, or muscle aches, and contact a healthcare provider if you become sick.
