It's March 1980, and Carol Girard and her husband are living an ordinary life in a small town in the Adirondacks. https://catalog.siskiyou.bywatersolutions.com/cgi-bin/koha/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=189352 They have just had their first child, and though Carol is struggling with the challenges of new motherhood, her future seems clear. Until something extraordinary happens: an inexplicable flickering of light in the sky, which is ultimately determined to be communication from intelligent life on another planet. But these beings are eleven light-years away, and nothing is known about them other than the fact that they seem to know we exist too. And so begins a decades-long exchange of messages with this mysterious, faraway civilization. As humanity reels from a shifting understanding of its place in the universe, we follow the stories of the Girard family: Carol, whose fascination with this other life sparks a desperate search for spiritual meaning; Michael, her loyal son, who finds solace not in the stars above his head but in the ground beneath his feet; and Ro, Carol's bright and ambitious daughter, whose childhood goal to work in interstellar communication will evolve into something far grander. Tracing five decades of love, loss, ambition, and self-discovery, The Radiant Dark is a stunning examination of a family navigating their lives with the knowledge that we are not alone

Bring your library card to see this Kanopy showing of GATHER : The stories of Natives on the front lines of a growing movement to reconnect with spiritual and cultural identities that were devastated by genocide. An Indigenous chef embarks on an ambitious project to reclaim ancient food ways on the Apache reservation; in South Dakota, a gifted Lakota high school student, raised on a buffalo ranch, is proving her tribe’s native wisdom through her passion for science; and a group of young men of the Yurok tribe in Northern California are struggling to keep their culture alive and rehabilitate the habitat of their sacred salmon. All these stories combine to show how the reclaiming and recovery of ancient food ways is a way forward for Native Americans to bring back health and vitality to their people.

From our Book of the Week: Duty Honor Country & Life, by Admiral William Mcraven. Remember & Honor this Memorial day. ❤️
I remember the sorrow.
The sound of taps on the hillside covered with the graves of heroes.
The tearful widow. A weeping child.
A folded flag.
I remember the sorrow so clearly.
Their shadows grow dim and I fight to remember.
Their stories grow old and I must fight to remember.
They gave everything.
The least I can do is remember.
I remember.
I must remember.
I must always remember.

Admiral McRaven's Duty, Honor, Country & Life is our Book of the Week to Celebrate Memorial Day 2026. With his unique writing style, each speech is a story recalling acts of heroism, courage, sacrifice, and a sense of duty, honor, and country. These speeches include tributes to soldiers, Navy SEALs, law enforcement officers, doctors, public servants, Boy Scouts, graduating students, that game of football, and full of inspiration and wisdom, Duty, Honor, Country, and Life is a reminder to us all of our time-honored American values of civility and decency -- and a reflection on what these values mean for the future of our country. https://siskiyou.bywatersolutions.com/cgi-bin/koha/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=189303
