-(Postponed)The well-being of our local communities is a priority. Due to concerns about smoke impacts, CAL FIRE has postponed prescribed burn ignitions for today and tomorrow. We understand that smoke can affect residents’ health and daily activities, and we appreciate your patience and understanding.

CAL FIRE and cooperating agencies successfully treated approximately 900 acres at the Big Springs Ranch Wildlife Area. This treatment helped restore grasslands by reducing encroaching vegetation, improve wildlife habitat, protect watershed health, and reduce hazardous fuels that threaten lives, property, and natural resources. The operation also provided valuable training and strengthened teamwork among our cooperating agencies.

The Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) will remain in place today to support unmanned aircraft system (UAS) operations as crews monitor and patrol containment lines.

Resources will remain at the burn site over the next couple of days, conducting mop-up and patrol operations to keep the fire within the existing burn footprint.

CAL FIRE plans to resume the prescribed burn in the near future when conditions are favorable. Follow CAL FIRE Siskiyou on Facebook or Instagram for updates.

Today marks the second anniversary of the complete removal of the four lower Klamath hydroelectric dams. It was on October 2, 2024 that Kiewit, our dam removal contractor, wrapped up all work in the river. But that was by no means the end of the project.

In the past 24 months:
- RES, our restoration contractor, ensured that 2,200 acres of formerly submerged lands were replanted with billions of native seeds and hundreds of thousands of native plants, plugs, shrubs and trees
- 3.5 miles of high-priority tributaries, once covered in toxic reservoir water, have been restored and reconnected to floodplains
- Hundreds of trees, with root wads intact, were added to streams to create instant habitat
- Tens of thousands of salmon have journeyed past the former dam sites, with many making it far into Oregon rivers and streams above Upper Klamath Lake
- More than 400 stream miles have been reopened for salmon, steelhead and Pacific lamprey
- Water quality and temperature have greatly improved
- The KRRC project has received worldwide attention with stories appearing in the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Associated Press, the BBC and scores of other major media outlets

We were always optimistic about the project, but the positive results in the past two years have far exceeded our expectations. We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to the tribes, contractors, stakeholders, agency staff, and every person who played a role or cheered us on as we undertook the largest dam removal and river restoration in US history.
