As of 5 p.m., Pacific Gas & Electric has not initiated its planned Public Safety Power Shutoff in Sutter County, which was expected to impact residents living in and around the Sutter Buttes. However, it could occur at any point today or tomorrow, so we encourage residents to stay prepared!
In the meantime, we've received a lot of questions about why this is happening. We hope the attached graphic and information below help answer some of those questions.

⚠️ WHAT IS A PUBLIC SAFETY POWER SHUTOFF (PSPS)?
A Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) is a temporary power outage initiated by PG&E during periods of extreme fire weather to help reduce the risk of wildfires caused by electrical equipment.
A PSPS may be considered when conditions such as the following are present:
• Strong winds
• High temperatures
• Dry vegetation and low humidity
• Elevated wildfire risk
The decision to shut off power is made by PG&E based on weather forecasts, field observations, and wildfire risk assessments.
➡️Who decides when a PSPS occurs?
A PSPS is not ordered by Sutter County. The authority and requirements for utility wildfire mitigation programs are established by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), which regulates California’s investor-owned utilities, including PG&E. PG&E is responsible for determining when conditions warrant a PSPS and when power can be safely restored.
Sutter County cannot prevent, cancel, authorize, or direct a PSPS. Those decisions are made by PG&E under state regulatory requirements and wildfire safety protocols.
➡️What is Sutter County’s role?
While Sutter County does not control PSPS decisions, we work to:
• Share information with residents
• Coordinate with PG&E and partner agencies
• Coordinate with PG&E to establish Community Resource Centers when needed
• Connect residents with available resources and assistance
• Support preparedness and response efforts throughout the event
• Be ready to respond if an emergency occurs, including fire response, evacuations, and public safety coordination
➡️How can you prepare?
• Charge phones and electronic devices
• Plan for refrigerated medications and medical equipment
• Keep vehicle fuel tanks at least half full
• Have flashlights and extra batteries available
• Monitor trusted sources for updates
