On Saturday morning, an overturned semi-truck hauling cabbage blocked both northbound lanes of Highway 99 at Wilson Road. The driver was extricated and sustained only minor injuries.
Responding crews from the Sutter County Fire Department mitigated a fuel leak from one of the semi's saddle tanks and secured the scene. Cleanup operations included removal of spilled cabbage from the roadway and management of the fuel spill.

At approximately 10 a.m., Sutter County Fire crews responded to a fully involved semi-truck fire at Highway 113 and George Washington Boulevard. The semi was transporting a tractor and a tank of fertilizer chemical, neither of which were impacted by the fire.

Fire crews from Sutter County Fire Stations 8, 6 and 5, Battalion Chief units, and one engine company from Yuba City Fire Department responded to the incident. The first arriving engine company made a quick knockdown of the fire, preventing further extension and additional hazards.

The roadway remains closed by California Highway Patrol and Caltrans for approximately the next hour while crews continue overhaul operations and ensure the area is safe for reopening.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes during the temporary closure.

Sutter County is pleased to welcome Fire Chief Kyle Long to our team.

Chief Long brings more than two decades of fire service experience, having begun his career in 2002 as a volunteer with the Cordelia Fire Protection District before joining the Vallejo Fire Department in 2003. Over the course of his career in Vallejo, he rose through the ranks from firefighter/paramedic to Captain, Battalion Chief, Deputy Chief, and ultimately Fire Chief. He has also served as Union President for IAFF Local 1186, demonstrating a strong commitment to leadership and advocacy within the fire service. Most recently, he served as a Deputy Chief with the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, where he led the FIRIS program supporting fire and rescue operations across the state.

We look forward to the leadership, experience, and dedication Chief Long brings to our community as he leads the Sutter County Fire Department.

Please join us in welcoming Chief Long to Sutter County.

SUTTER COUNTY FIRE MEDIA RELEASE
A Message from Interim Fire Chief Epperson, Sutter County Fire Department:

The City of Live Oak fire contract cancellation notice is due to the City of Live Oak’s “severe budget deficit.” This does not directly impact the Sutter County Fire stations in Sutter and Oswald-Tudor — however, these stations are still facing critically low funding.

Funding for these remaining stations is already critically low. Without additional resources, we risk these stations becoming partially or fully unstaffed in the upcoming year, with emergency service available only when volunteers can respond. This would severely limit our ability to provide timely fire and medical response, putting lives and property at greater risk.

Why this matters:
• A sales tax measure was placed on the ballot in 2022 to address this issue (Measure A). The Measure was defeated with a 51.61% “no” vote compared to 48.39% yes vote.

Our firefighters remain dedicated to protecting the community — but we need your help to keep stations open and engines staffed, and I encourage every resident to stay informed, get involved, and help shape the future of your fire service in Sutter County.

Your support can make the difference.
