The Link Between Heart Disease and Red Meat May Sit in the Gut
Researchers have uncovered a potential answer for why red meat is so closely tied to an increased risk for cardiovascular concerns.

At the study’s end, the findings showed that participants who are more meat – and more red meat in particular – saw a higher risk for developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. That’s cardiovascular disease accompanied by thickening of the arteries.

And the increased risk wasn’t minimal, either. Participants saw a 22% higher risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease for every 1.1 serving they ate per day.

Researchers have uncovered why red meat is so closely tied to an increased risk for cardiovascular concerns, and it may be your gut.

How Daylight Saving Time Impacts Your Health.

How Daylight Saving Time Impacts Your Health.
Gaining an extra hour of daylight is a sure sign that spring is on its way and warmer months are ahead! But "springing forward" can also impact your health in surprising ways.

Moving the clocks ahead can throw off your circadian rhythm—your body's natural 24 hour cycle that aligns with daylight hours and nighttime hours. This change can contribute to getting less sleep than you need. Lack of sleep in the days after a time change can lead to grogginess and reduced mental sharpness.

Make sure to add extra reminders to take your medications on time after a time change, such as leaving a note for yourself or setting a reminder notification in your smartphone. One common concern is when to take your medications the day after a time change. In general, it is recommended to keep your medications on the same schedule. So, if you take your medication at 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. on the Saturday before the time change, take your medications at 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. on the Sunday after the time change.

We May Finally Know How The First Cells on Earth Formed
NATURE
04 March 2024
ByDAVID NIELD

The story of how life started on Earth is one that scientists are eager to learn. Researchers may have uncovered an important detail in the plot of chapter one: an explanation of how bubbles of fat came to form the membranes of the very first cells.

A key part of the new findings, made by a team from The Scripps Research Institute in California, is that a chemical process called phosphorylation may have happened earlier than previously thought.

This process adds groups of atoms that include phosphorus to a molecule, bringing extra functions with it – functions that can turn spherical collections of fats called protocells into more advanced versions of themselves, able to be more versatile, stable, and chemically active.

These protocells are widely thought to have been vital building blocks for biochemistry more than 3.5 billion years ago, perhaps emerging from hot springs under the ocean along the way to the evolution of more complex biological structures.

Opill, The First Over-The-Counter Birth Control Pill: How Effective Is It, And When It Will Be Available?
It doesn't require a prescription.

BY KORIN MILLER AND OLIVIA EVANSPUBLISHED: MAR 05, 2024 3:41 PM EST.

Opill, the first over-the-counter birth control pill available in the U.S., is now shipping to stores. The Food and Drug Administration officially approved Opill back in July, marking the first time a contraceptive pill can be sold in the United States without a doctor's prescription.

Perrigo, the maker of Opill, announced on Monday that Opill has shipped to major stores and pharmacies. You can also pre-order it from some retailers and Opill.com starting this week.

Opill's availability comes at an especially urgent time. Women's access to abortion and reproductive health care have faced increasing restrictions in the wake of the Roe v. Wade's overturning in June of 2022.

Toolkit for reducing cervical cancer risk
January 23, 2024

Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women globally, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. In the U.S., cervical cancer is no longer a common cause of cancer death because of the use of a screening test called a Pap smear, which detects changes in cervical cells.

While the overall rate of cervical cancer in the U.S. is declining, the number of people diagnosed with late-stage cervical cancer is increasing, and rates among Black women are disproportionately high. Research also indicates that many women still are not being screened for cervical cancer.

Kristina Butler, M.D., a Mayo Clinic gynecologic oncologist, discusses the tools available to reduce your cervical cancer risk, including a trusted healthcare professional, the HPV vaccine and regular screening:

Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women globally, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. In the U.S., cervical cancer [...]

Summary:
A new fossil, named 'Attenborough's strange bird' after naturalist and documentarian Sir David Attenborough, is the first of its kind to evolve a toothless beak. It's from a branch of the bird family tree that went extinct in the mass extinction 66 million years ago, and this strange bird is another puzzle piece that helps explain why some birds -- and their fellow dinosaurs -- went extinct, and others survived to today.
