Our deputies are working alongside partner agencies to help ensure everyone enjoys the day safely. Whether you're boating, swimming, or spending time with friends and family, remember to wear life jackets, designate a sober operator, stay aware of your surroundings, and follow all boating laws.

Have fun, be responsible, and help make it a safe day for everyone on the water! 🚔⚓🌊

Today, the Nassau County Sheriff's Office proudly celebrated the graduation of participants in its Sheriff's Teen Citizens Academy, marking the successful completion of a three-day immersive program designed to introduce local teens to the field of law enforcement.
Held June 3 through June 5, the academy provided teens ages 13-18 with a behind-the-scenes look at the many responsibilities and opportunities within the Sheriff's Office. The program was created for young people interested in learning more about law enforcement and gaining firsthand experience through hands-on activities and interactions with deputies and staff.
Throughout the academy, participants learned defensive tactics used by deputies, firearm safety and proficiency, toured the Nassau County Jail, and explored several specialized units within the agency. Students also had the opportunity to ask questions, build relationships with law enforcement professionals, and gain a deeper understanding of what it means to serve and protect a community.
Today's graduation ceremony recognized the hard work, dedication, and enthusiasm demonstrated by each participant during the academy.
“One of the most rewarding parts of this academy was getting to know these young men and women over the past three days,” said Sgt. Robert Jackson. “We had the opportunity to interact with them, answer their questions, and give them a firsthand look at what law enforcement is really about. Watching their confidence grow and seeing their enthusiasm for learning made this experience just as meaningful for us as it was for them. We hope they leave with a better understanding of our profession and the positive impact they can have in their own communities.”
Sheriff Bill Leeper said the Sheriff's Teen Citizens Academy is an important investment in the future of Nassau County.
“This academy gives young people an inside look at the many layers of law enforcement while helping them develop a greater understanding of the work our deputies perform every day,” said Sheriff Leeper. “It is encouraging to see so many motivated young people take an interest in public service, and we are proud to celebrate their accomplishments today. We hope this experience leaves a lasting impact and inspires them to continue serving their communities in positive ways.”
The Nassau County Sheriff's Office remains committed to strengthening relationships with the community through educational outreach programs that promote leadership, responsibility, and civic engagement.

P.S. Special shoutout to our sponsors who helped provide these teens with breakfast and lunch. We would like to thank Publix, Willie Jewells BBQ, Chick-fil-A, DeCicco's Pizzeria, and Texas Roadhouse! And we're happy that Judge Higginbotham finally got a copy of Sheriff's book Highway of Horror.

Nassau County Sheriff’s Office deputies didn't hesitate when they arrived at the scene of a house fire on Red Holly Place in Yulee and learned a resident may still be inside.

On May 26, the 911 Communications Center received a report of a residential fire. Deputies who were responding to an unrelated call nearby quickly diverted to the scene. Upon arrival, they were informed that the homeowner was still inside. Without hesitation, deputies entered the smoke-filled home to search for the resident and ensure he was safely evacuated.

Fortunately, deputies located the homeowner in the backyard and escorted him to safety. Nassau County Fire Rescue (NCFR) arrived shortly thereafter and rescued a dog from the residence. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, which was contained to the kitchen.

“Our deputies are trained to respond when people need help the most, and that’s exactly what they did in this situation,” Sheriff Bill Leeper stated. “Their courage, quick thinking, and commitment to protecting others helped bring this incident to a safe conclusion. I am incredibly proud of their actions.”

A Jacksonville man has been sentenced by a U.S. District Judge to 10 years in federal prison for conspiracy to distribute controlled substances and distribution of 50 grams or more of actual methamphetamine. Trey Allan King, 32, pleaded guilty on January 31.

The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case alongside the Drug Enforcement Administration, Bureau of Alcohol, To***co, Fi****ms, and Explosives, and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

According to court documents, during the summer of 2024, King was a member of a drug trafficking conspiracy that sold ma*****na and methamphetamine at different trap house locations across Jacksonville. Between July 18 and August 14, 2024, a confidential source bought approximately 1,055 grams of methamphetamine from members of the drug trafficking organization. On August 7, 2024, King himself sold the confidential source approximately 238 grams of actual methamphetamine in exchange for $1,500. The investigation further revealed that King regularly sold and delivered drugs on behalf of the organization, including from a mobile camper.

“Drug traffickers continue to profit by bringing dangerous substances into our communities, putting lives at risk. This sentence sends a clear message that those who choose to engage in this criminal activity will be held accountable,” Sheriff Bill Leeper said. “This case demonstrates the importance of law enforcement agencies working together to dismantle drug trafficking organizations. NCSO remains committed to working with our partner agencies to combat drug trafficking and hold offenders accountable.”

On May 23, a citizen accidentally locked her keys inside her vehicle along with her dog. Fortunately, Nassau County Sheriff's Office deputies were able to safely unlock the vehicle and rescue the pup without having to break a window.

While this was an accident, it serves as an important reminder to never leave pets unattended in a vehicle, especially during Florida's hot weather.

“Even on days that don’t feel extremely hot, temperatures inside a vehicle can rise rapidly and become dangerous for pets in a matter of minutes,” said Sheriff Bill Leeper. “We were glad our deputies could help reunite this dog with its owner safely, but we encourage everyone to take extra precautions and never leave their pets unattended in a vehicle.”

If you see a dog locked in a vehicle, first determine whether it appears to be in distress. Is the air conditioning running? Is the owner nearby? Has the dog been inside for more than a few minutes? While a dog in a car is not always an emergency, it's important to assess the situation carefully.

If the dog is clearly suffering and the owner cannot be located, call 911 or a nearby law enforcement officer for assistance. If instructed, you may need to forcibly enter the vehicle to save the animal. Florida law protects individuals from liability for damages when breaking into a vehicle to rescue a vulnerable person or animal, provided that:

• There is no other reasonable way for the person or animal to exit the vehicle
• The rescuer reasonably believes the person or animal is in imminent danger of harm
• Law enforcement or 911 is contacted before or immediately after entry
• No more force than necessary is used to gain access
• The rescuer remains with the person or animal in a safe location near the vehicle until first responders arrive

A few extra minutes of caution can help prevent a tragedy.
