Liam Stewart School zone Frequently asked questions:

Q: Where are the signs?
A: They have been ordered this is a new law and so the signs do not come from a template and had to be custom ordered.

Q: When are school zones?
A: Per the Model Traffic Code Yuma has adopted School Zones are "When children are present" What this means is more often than not they are during pick up and drop off, but will vary hours depending on children's needs.

Q: When do these take effect?
A: They are effective now. We understand the signs are not up, but the change did go in to effect statewide August 12th, 2026 which is today.

As always if you have any more questions do not hesitate to reach out to our non emergent line (970)848-5441 to get clarification.

PUBLIC SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENT:

YUMA POLICE DEPARTMENT:

SUBJECT: Implementation of Colorado House Bill 26-1318 โ€” Extended School Zones & Reduced Speed Limits

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Yuma Police Department is announcing upcoming changes to local school zone enforcement following the passage of Colorado House Bill 26-1318 (The Liam Stewart School Zone Act).

To protect students, pedestrians, and cyclists commuting to and from school, the City of Yuma will be extending designated school zone boundaries and reducing school zone speed limits across the city.

Key Changes to Know

Extended Boundaries: All designated school zones in Yuma will extend up to 200 feet from school property lines to create a safer buffer for morning drop-offs and afternoon pick-ups.

Lower Speed Limit: The maximum speed limit in active school zones and designated school streets will be lowered to 10 MPH.

Doubled Fines: In accordance with state law, traffic penalties and surcharges double for violations committed within a posted school zone.

Pedestrian Right-of-Way: Drivers must yield the right-of-way to all pedestrians, bicyclists, and scooter users within designated school zone boundaries.

What Drivers Should Expect

New signage indicating the extended 200-foot boundaries and the updated 10 MPH speed limit has been ordered and will be posted around local schools. Yuma Police officers will be conducting increased patrols during school arrival and dismissal hours to educate drivers and enforce the new regulations.

Driver Reminders

Plan Extra Time: Expect slower traffic during peak morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times.

Put Away Distractions: Put phones away and keep eyes strictly on the road and crosswalks.

Stop for Crosswalks: Never attempt to pass a vehicle that has stopped at a crosswalk.

The Yuma Police Department thanks our community in advance for drive-time patience and cooperation as we work together to keep Yuma's students safe.
