Before Ohio had a capital… this building almost was it.

The Stone Academy, built in 1809 in the Putnam Historic District, was originally intended to serve as Ohio’s state capitol. While that honor went to Zanesville across the river, this historic building went on to play an even more powerful role in our nation’s story.

In the 1830s, it became a center for abolitionist activity and later served as a stop on the Underground Railroad — where a hidden trap door beneath the staircase provided refuge for those seeking freedom.
