This tiny white-tailed deer fawn found a quiet hiding place on MVPD intern Claire's front porch. We wanted to remind our followers to expect the unexpected with wildlife especially during this time of year.
If you come across a fawn alone, the most important thing you can do is leave it where it is. While it may look abandoned, mother deer intentionally leave their fawns hidden for long periods of time while they forage for food. This helps keep predators away from their young.
For the first few weeks of life, fawns rely on their spotted coats and their ability to stay incredibly still to remain hidden and safe. In almost every case, mom is nearby and will return when she knows the area is clear.
It can be tempting to help, but picking up or moving a fawn can do more harm than good. Sometimes the best way to care for wildlife… is simply giving them space. 💚
Because in nature, you should always expect the unexpected.
