Meet Ms. Laura Verkaik | HS School Counseling

Look who's back! We are overjoyed to welcome Laura Verkaik back to iCademy as our High School School Counselor after three years away. Laura brings a massive heart for education, a background full of amazing global adventures, and a true dedication to our school.

"Hey there I'm Laura and I can't wait to be back as the high school counselor after three years away! iCademy embodies two big parts of me: education and the globe. I grew up in Asia (the Philippines and Sri Lanka), taught in Hungary and Slovakia, and most recently lived on a ship with my husband and three kids with a small volunteer community from 65 nations, which opened a bookshop for the ports we docked in West Africa and the Caribbean. As a family, we love to travel (especially to visit friends), play games, cook tasty meals, welcome people into our home, and dream of running a food truck. My own hobbies include walking trails, gardening, and have plans to pick up coffee roasting. I am so looking forward to working with students and families to help every student thrive in high school in order to be ready for whatever lies beyond. Have a great rest of your summer and see you soon!"

Meet Mr. Cory Dams | MS Math and Social Studies Teacher

Today we are SO EXCITED to introduce Cory Dams as the newest member of our iCademy family! Cory joins us as our Middle School Math and Social Studies Teacher, bringing a phenomenal 17 years of classroom experience and a passion for helping middle schoolers thrive.

“Hello! I'm Cory Dams, and I'm looking forward to joining the iCademy team! I spent 8 years teaching middle school students in North Carolina and another 9 years teaching at Innocademy. I am a graduate of Central Michigan University and North Carolina State University.

Besides my love of working with middle school students, I also enjoy spending time with my wife and two sons. Most days during the spring and early summer, you will find me at the baseball fields cheering on my boys and many other student athletes. I spend a lot of time on the bike as well. Most days I'm up early riding in a virtual environment, but I do enjoy hitting the trails and the roads. I am excited to start the school year and share my love of mathematics and social studies with you!”

Looking back at one of our favorite moments right before break week!

Our K-5 students had a very special virtual visit from author Julie Buchholtz of Lake Superior State University! She treated our young learners to a wonderful read-aloud of her book, Who Am I?.

Having real-world connections and inspiring guests drop into our virtual classrooms is a huge part of what makes the iCademy Global community so vibrant. Miigwech (thank you), Julie, for sharing your story and your time with our students!
