SCAM ALERT
Some waste of oxygen is targeting people via text by sending them fake toll notices. This is a far more realistic notification than previous text scams regarding toll violations. The elderly are particularly susceptible to this type of scam. A couple of things to note: They don't list your name, the date, time, and location of the infraction. Rather than tell you where to send payment, they have a QR Code. They don't list your registration plate #, and most importantly - it came through a text message. If you owe tolls that you haven't paid, you will get a letter via the USPS. Just delete the text - don't reply or engage with these people. All it does is confirm to them that they've found a working cell phone number.

PRESS RELEASE: FATAL STRUCTURE FIRE ON NORTH PINE STREET

ZEIGLER, IL – The Zeigler Police Department is saddened to report the death of Rachel Zettler, age 58, on Thursday, April 16, 2026.

At approximately 5:15 AM, Zeigler Fire and Police Departments were dispatched to a reported structure fire located on North Pine Street.

The intensity of the fire and subsequent explosion resulted in the activation of MABAS, bringing in much needed assistance from the Fire Departments of surrounding communities.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Zeigler Police Department, the Zeigler Fire Department, and the Office of the State Fire Marshal. At this time, no further details regarding the origin of the fire are available.

In observance of National Telecommunicators Week, ZPD Assistant Chief Childers delivered a cake to the Franklin County Office of Emergency Management & Communications Dispatch Center at lunchtime today. The professional telecommunicators staffing the OEMC answer 9-1-1 calls, as well as enhance our ability to safely and efficiently do our jobs on the street. And in emergency situations (like this morning), they effectively coordinate resources from multiple agencies saving lives and property. It can be a real pressure-cooker of a job and they don't get enough credit for what they do.

We at the Zeigler Police Department would like to let the city know that Officer Simmons has been appointed as the Code Enforcement Officer. The entire Police department will be working with him as he takes lead in this task to clean up the derelict properties. The fine amounts have been raised so it's going to be worth our time to prosecute those who try to ignore citations. Our goal is not to have to issue tickets and to that affect we will give written warnings first. Please help us in this endeavor to have a nice and clean town to be proud of. This includes working with Animal Control, and the Department of Public Health.

We will miss Vader. Prayers to K-9 handler Lt. Anthis and the whole Franklin County Sheriff's Department.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

City of Zeigler is preparing for Incoming Winter Storm.

Snow Removal Operations Planned to Maintain Safe Streets

Zeigler, IL – The City of Zeigler is closely monitoring the incoming winter storm forecasted to impact our area this weekend, and is taking steps to ensure crews are prepared to respond with the assets we have available.

City street department crews will be on standby and will begin snow removal operations as conditions warrant. Primary routes, emergency access roads, and heavily traveled streets will be addressed first, followed by residential streets as weather conditions and snowfall allow.

Residents are reminded to use caution while traveling during and after the storm. Please allow snow removal crews ample room to work and avoid parking vehicles on city streets during snowfall if possible, as this helps crews clear roadways more efficiently.

The City asks for patience as crews work through the storm. Snow removal efforts will continue until streets are passable and safe for travel.

Further updates will be provided as conditions change.

For questions or concerns, residents may contact City Hall during regular business hours.
