🚒 A Day in the Life of a Firefighter 🚒

Students from the George Whittell High School Fire Science Program recently spent the day at the firehouse getting a firsthand look at what it takes to be a firefighter.

Throughout the day, the students participated in hands-on training drills, joined the crew for a workout, and even helped prepare lunch for the firefighters. From training and teamwork to daily station responsibilities, they experienced many of the duties that make up a firefighter’s day.

A special thank you to Captain Ben Pratt, Firefighter/Paramedics David Martland, Kevin Schoonmaker, Djair Sancho, Josh Wesson, Foster Saunders, and Lalo Lobato, along with Public Information Officer Michelle Turner, for taking the time to mentor and inspire the next generation of fire service professionals.

We are proud to support the George Whittell Fire Science Program and help provide students with real-world experiences that build knowledge, confidence, and a passion for public service.

Who knows? We may have spent the day training some future Tahoe Douglas firefighters! 🔥👨‍🚒👩‍🚒

You may notice crews from Kingsbury General Improvement District out flowing fire hydrants throughout the community. This important maintenance helps ensure our water system and fire protection infrastructure are working properly when they are needed most.

Hydrant flow testing allows crews to:
• Pressure check the system
• Flow check water capacity for firefighting operations
• Chlorine check water quality throughout the distribution system

These routine checks help maintain reliable water service and support fire protection capabilities for our community.

Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District appreciates our strong partnership with Kingsbury General Improvement District and the important work they do to help protect and serve our community.

Yesterday, Tahoe Douglas Fire had a special four-legged visitor at the firehouse! 🐾

Captain Andy Isenberg stopped by with a Liberty Dogs puppy-in-training that he is currently helping raise as part of the incredible program through Liberty Dogs in Reno.

Liberty Dogs is a nonprofit organization dedicated to training and placing service dogs with U.S. military veterans living with PTSD and other disabilities. Their mission is centered on empowering veterans through the companionship, support, and life-changing assistance these highly trained dogs provide.

Programs like this rely on volunteer puppy raisers who help socialize and train future service dogs during their early development — and Captain Isenberg is proud to be part of that mission.

Our crews enjoyed spending time with this future service dog, helping expose the pup to new environments, sounds, and people — all important parts of the training process.

Thank you to Liberty Dogs for the amazing work you are doing to support our veterans and communities. 🇺🇸🐕

This Memorial Day, the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District pauses to honor and remember the brave men and women of our United States Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to our country.

Their sacrifice secured the freedoms we enjoy every day, and we are forever grateful for their courage, dedication, and selflessness.

We are also proud to serve alongside several firefighters within our department who are veterans themselves. Their continued commitment to service — first to our nation and now to our community — reflects the enduring spirit of duty and sacrifice.

As we gather with family and friends this holiday, we encourage everyone to take a moment to remember and honor those who never made it home.

From all of us at Tahoe Douglas Fire, thank you to our fallen heroes, our veterans, and the military families who carry their legacy forward.

Huge shoutout to the incredible public safety professionals who helped bring the GWHS Fire Science Program to life for our students this week! 👏🔥

A special thank you to Douglas County Emergency Manager Kara Easton, 911 Emergency Communications Supervisors Nonie & Kaitlyn, FF/PM Martland and DCSO Sergeant Jacobsen for creating hands-on learning experiences that showed students how emergency management, dispatch, law enforcement and fire personnel work together during critical incidents.

Students rotated through stations during a simulated wildland fire threatening homes and residents - creating calls for service, dispatching incidents, completing first arriving size-ups and learning how agencies coordinate during large scale emergencies. 🚒📞🚔🔥

🚑🚒 During National EMS Week, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District proudly recognizes and thanks all of our firefighters for the lifesaving care they provide to our community each and every day.

Every firefighter in our department is trained as an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician, ensuring our crews are prepared to deliver critical medical care whenever emergencies happen.

Captain Chris Wade, Engineer Matt Steventon, Firefighter/Paramedic Josh Wesson, Firefighter/Paramedic Matt Misquez, and Probationary Firefighter/Paramedic Foster Saunders proudly flew the American flag from our ladder truck during Lake Tahoe Community College’s groundbreaking ceremony for the new Tahoe Basin Public Safety Training Complex in honor of EMS Week and EMS professionals everywhere.

This new training complex represents an exciting investment in the future of public safety and emergency medical services in our region. We are proud to support a facility that will help educate and train the next generation of EMS and fire service professionals.

Whether responding to medical emergencies, traffic collisions, fires, or rescues, our firefighters serve this community with professionalism, compassion, and dedication 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Please join us in thanking all EMS providers and firefighters for their continued commitment to keeping our community safe.

As summer approaches, remember that safety on Lake Tahoe starts before you hit the water. ☀️ 🌊

• Warm weather does not mean warm water. Lake Tahoe water temperatures can remain dangerously cold, even on hot days.

• Lake Tahoe weather changes fast. Wind, waves and storms can develop quickly and create hazardous conditions.

• Everyone on board should have a properly fitted life jacket. Cold water and exhaustion can impact even experienced swimmers.

• A fun lake day starts with a safety plan. Stay aware, stay prepared and stay safe on the water.

Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit to Conduct Understory Burn

Fire Information Booth Available During Active Burning

(SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CA, May 11, 2026) – The Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is scheduled to conduct an understory burn on approximately 32 acres south of Pioneer Trail, between Hepka Drive and Jicarilla Drive. The burn will take place from May 14-16, pending all required approvals. A Fire Information booth will be set up along Pioneer Trail near Jicarilla Drive during active burning with Forest Service personnel on hand to answer questions.

The area may close to the public for several days for public safety. Watch for warning signs along roads near all prescribed fire areas before and during burns.

Residents may experience smoke during the prescribed burns. For more detailed information about air quality, go to AirNow online or download the app. When driving, slow down and turn on your headlights when you encounter smoke on the road.

We will evaluate weather conditions in the hours before a burn begins. If conditions warrant, scheduled prescribed fire activities may be canceled.

Stay informed about the scheduled prescribed fires through our forest website, social media channels, and the Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team Prescribed Fire Map. We will notify county emergency management officials when burning begins.
