When we redesigned our Summer Camp schedule this year to give children more time to engage in each activity, we hoped the new structure would create deeper learning experiences and stronger relationships. Four weeks after camp drew to a close, community feedback suggests the new approach worked!

ZYEP’s 18th Annual Summer Camp served 120 children ages 6-12 from June 22 to July 17, with an average of 100 youth attending each day. Twenty-two counselors guided eight groups of 12 to 14 children through six core activity areas: Traditional Dance, Traditional Art, Zuni Culture, Nutrition, Physical Activity and Free Time.

This summer, ZYEP welcomed another group of our community’s youngest athletes to Ho’n A:wan Park for our 4th Annual T-Ball League!

Over three weeks, 18 children ages 4 and 5 learned the fundamentals of the game while building confidence and making memories with teammates, coaches and supportive family members. They also got to dress in costumes and compete in a Parents vs. Players Game!

For some young people, ZYEP is a place to spend the summer, play sports or explore new interests. For others, it also becomes a place where those precious childhood experiences inspire them to return and guide the next generation.

That has certainly been true for Shaun Lementino, 17. A senior at Zuni High School, he’s already spent a decade with ZYEP, first as a Summer Camp participant and flag football player, and now as a Summer Camp counselor. Looking back, he says his journey began long before his first day with ZYEP as a young camper.

Eleven ZYEP art apprentices are putting the finishing touches on their first handmade garments as they prepare for a public showcase this Friday, July 31, here at Ho’n A:wan Park. Community members are invited to attend the event, meet the artists and celebrate the culmination of their 10-week Emerging Artist Apprenticeship in Pueblo sewing.

The showcase, scheduled for 5 to 7:30 p.m., marks the conclusion of the intensive program. The top four students — Gabrielle Baca, 18; Synthea Natewa, 21; Kalil Edaakie, 22; and Tairia Sepo-Owaleon, 22 — will then have an opportunity to travel with ZYEP to Santa Fe, New Mexico. They will showcase their work at Keshi the Zuni Connection on Aug. 15-16!
