Zuni Environmental Protection Program

Zuni Environmental Protection Program ZEPP is dedicated to the health and well being of the lands and people of the Zuni Pueblo. Contact the Transfer Station if you have questions.

At the Zuni Transfer Station, on Route 301 South near the Headstart campus, you can recycle clean tin cans, aluminum, electronics, waste metal (such as old appliances, your old barbecue, anything metal), plastic bottles and paper, including any clean paper such as corrugated cardboard, cereal box cardboard or waste paper. The Transfer Station is open Tuesday through Saturday at 8am and closes at 4

:00pm. The Pia Mesa Yard Waste facility is about 2 miles up Pia Mesa Road just south of Zuni, and is open the same hours as the Transfer Station. (505)782-2484

It accepts green waste, bucked logs (cut to no more than 2 foot lengths), wood chips, weeds. There is also a pit at the site for disposal of dead animals. This pit is only for dead animals, no plastic of any kind or any type of non-organic matter is allowed. Pia Mesa is monitored by numerous hidden surveillance cameras and if you are caught dumping inappropriate materials you will be required to return to the site and remove the offending materials and you may be subject to a fine.

The results of the 2020 US National Litter Study shows half as much roadside litter as in 2009, but in the 50 billion pieces of litter that were counted 207 million were masks and gloves and there was twice as much alcoholic beverage containers as in 2009. The short story: if you drink alcohol, (or anything else) DON’T THROW YOUR CANS OR BOTTLES OUT OF THE WINDOW! Put them in a trash receptacle. Same goes with your masks when you’re out exercising; don’t just drop it on the trail!

It’s all our planet; clean it up.

It’s all our planet; clean it up.

🌊When we pick up trash that is not ours, we help normalise caring for our planet. We help break the stigma that it is dirty to touch, and inspire awareness that it is actually dirty to leave it there. We can inspire so much change by leading by example.⁣
