On Wednesday, May 27, 2026, the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) carried out an assessment of the peanut trial plots located at the CARDI field station in Orange Hill. The activity involved farmers of Region One (1), students of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College, members of CARDI, and members of the Extension and Advisory Services Division within the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Transformation.

The trial plots were established under the International Trade Centre project titled “The Caribbean: Strengthening Sustainable Value Chains Through Productive and Commercial Alliances,” funded by the European Union. The peanut varieties evaluated during the yield assessment included Local Runner, NC2, and Belizean.

Participants were given the opportunity to examine several characteristics of the peanut plants, including plant size, variety type, and the size of the harvested nuts. The assessment also included nut counts per plant, comparisons of nut sizes, and the weighing of harvested nuts to evaluate differences among the varieties.

The peanut yield evaluation exercise provided a valuable opportunity for farmers, students, and agricultural personnel to gain practical insight into peanut cultivation and production techniques. This activity contributed to strengthening agricultural capacity and promoting sustainable crop development within St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The activity was facilitated by Donawa Jackson, CARDI Country Representative for St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines established a permanent Preparedness Plan Technical Team responsible for the continuous monitoring, analysis and reporting of Food and Nutrition Security (FNS) conditions in accordance with the National Preparedness Plan for Food and Nutrition Security Crisis.

On Tuesday May 26, the team launched the program at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus with members of the World Bank team including Senior Agricultural Economist, Ms. Eva Hasiner, Preparedness Plans Secretariat Global Focal Point, John Paxton Dearborn, Lead Food Security Consultant, Mr. Eduardo Araujo and Senior Consultant, Mr. Reuben Robertson.

The first session focused on the foundations, logic planning and indicator alignment. The session aimed to build a shared understanding of FNS concepts, introduce the preparedness plan, clarify roles and responsibilities and align ministries on the indicator reporting obligations.

The training will run for three (3) days from May 26-28. Day 2 of the training program is expected to include practical sessions, focusing on building the team’s ability to draft each section of the Joint Monitoring Report (JMR) using official indicators and simple analytical approaches. The final day will be a full simulation of the technical workflow where participants will be allowed to practice the entire quarterly monitoring and reporting workflow using a fictional dataset.

The main goal of the program is to ensure that FNS risks are identified early, analysed based on reliable and verifiable evidence and communicated in a timely manner to the committee to support decision making and identification of extra-ordinary FNS crises.
