☀️ Stay Cool & Hydrated

Hot weather can lead to heat exhaustion and other heat-related illnesses, whether you are outdoors or in a hot indoor environment. Dehydration can place added strain on the body, even when you are not in direct sunlight.

VIFEMS reminds the community to drink water regularly throughout the day, take breaks in the shade or an air-conditioned area and wear light, loose-fitting clothing. Do not wait until you feel thirsty to hydrate.

Watch for signs of heat illness, including headache, dizziness, weakness and nausea. If symptoms progress to confusion, seizures or loss of consciousness, call 911 immediately. These may be signs of heat stroke.

Protect yourself in the heat.

Summer Camp Safety with VIFEMS 🚒🚑

VIFEMS crews recently visited summer camps on St. Thomas and St. Croix to teach campers about fire safety, EMS and what to do during an emergency.

During the visits, campers enjoyed hands-on activities, including ambulance and fire truck tours, firefighter gear demonstrations, water hose demonstrations, simulated patient transport, exploring tools used during emergencies, practicing what to do during a fire, learning when and how to call 911, and more.

Thank You for a Safe Fourth of July Holiday

VIFEMS thanks the community for celebrating responsibly and helping make this year’s Fourth of July holiday a safe one.

🚫 Unauthorized Fireworks Use Is Illegal
While the holiday was largely observed safely, there were reported instances of individuals illegally setting off fireworks. The public is reminded that unauthorized fireworks use is prohibited, except for permitted, supervised public displays, and can create serious safety risks, including fires, injuries and emergency response concerns.

V.I. Code Title 23, § 732
The sale, use or explosion of fireworks is unlawful in the Virgin Islands except for permitted, supervised public displays.

Preparing for the Challenges of Electric Vehicle Emergencies ⚡🚒

As electric vehicles become increasingly common throughout the territory, continued training is essential to ensure VIFEMS personnel are prepared to respond safely and effectively when emergencies occur.

From June 19–27, personnel on St. Croix and St. Thomas completed specialized Electric Vehicle (EV) Incident Response Training led by instructor James Bolton.

Throughout the training, personnel responded to simulated EV emergencies by deploying a vehicle fire blanket, stabilizing a vehicle on its side and safely extricating a trapped occupant.

A Tesla Model Y, loaned by the VIEO: Virgin Islands Energy Office, allowed responders to examine key electric vehicle components and become more familiar with the hazards they may encounter during emergency operations.

VIFEMS thanks instructor James Bolton for his continued partnership and the Virgin Islands Energy Office for its support of this important training.
