History was made today on the island of St. Croix.

It was my privilege to attend the Installation Ceremony of Commander Hillis Benjamin where she was installed as the first female District Commander in the history of the American Legion District #10 of the Virgin Islands of the United States.

This achievement is more than a milestone, it is a defining moment for the American Legion in our Territory. Commander Benjamin’s election reflects her years of dedicated service, steadfast leadership, and unwavering commitment to Veterans, Legionnaires, the American Legion Auxiliary, and our community.

On behalf of the Office of Veterans Affairs, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Commander Benjamin and wish her every success as she begins this historic chapter of leadership. I look forward to supporting and working alongside her as we continue our shared mission of serving the men and women who have faithfully served our Nation.

Congratulations, Commander Hillis Benjamin! May your tenure be filled with meaningful accomplishments, strong partnerships, and continued service to the Veterans of the Virgin Islands of the United States.

“History is not only remembered, it is made by those with the courage to lead.”

Today, I had the distinct honor of presenting the State Director of Veterans Affairs “Coin of Excellence” to Past District Commander Secundino Roman-Cruz in recognition of his exceptional leadership and dedicated service as the American Legion District 10 Commander.

Leadership is measured not by titles held, but by lives impacted. Throughout his tenure, Commander Roman-Cruz demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the mission of the American Legion and to the men and women who have served our Nation. His steady leadership, dedication, and advocacy has contributed to the strengthening of the Veteran community throughout the United States Virgin Islands.

On behalf of the Virgin Islands Office of Veterans Affairs and the Veterans we are privileged to serve, thank you, Past Commander Roman-Cruz, for your selfless service, steadfast leadership, and the example you have set for others to follow. Your contributions have made a lasting difference, and your legacy of service will continue to inspire those who come after you.

Congratulations on a job exceptionally well done, and thank you for continuing to answer the call to serve.
