Hanoi Party Committee’s Secretary Pham Quang Nghi said it was not surprising that some PhDs and masters had failed civil service exams for Hanoi’s state agencies. Two months ago, half of the candidates with master’s degrees granted by foreign schools failed the 2015 civil service exam. However, numerous officers with master’s degree and doctorates work at agencies in the capital city of Hanoi.

Life skills should be offered as a subject in Viet Nam's education curriculum to encourage a more well-rounded development of students, such was the takeaway at an education conference held yesterday. Deputy Director of Save The Children Viet Nam, Doan Anh Tuan, spoke about life skills education at schools. Tuan cited increasing numbers of Vietnamese parents calling for life skills courses, arguing that such skills were needed in addition to academic knowledge nowadays.

One of the biggest weaknesses of Vietnamese students are weak critical thinking skills. Pham Hai Ha, a literature teacher at the Olympia School in Hanoi, said she wanted to see students who argue with their teachers and show evidence to prove their arguments. “The success of the literature teacher does not lie in the students’ capability of writing essays, but in their capability of arguing with teachers on different issues,” she said.
