For safer stays in Vietnam
Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security has clarified how the new overnight stay rule works, and it matters if you ever sleep anywhere that is not a hotel.
Since 1 July, households must notify the local authorities when anyone stays overnight at their home. That includes relatives and friends. If the homeowner is not present, the guest must file the notification themself.
🕚 The deadline is 11pm on the day of arrival, or 8am the next morning if you arrive late.
📱 Filing is free and takes minutes. Residents with a VNeID account can do it in the app under "Thông báo lưu trú", or through the Ministry of Public Security service portal. Links in the first comment.
☎️ No VNeID? Most foreigners on tourist visas do not have one. A phone call to the ward police or a short in-person visit also counts as valid notification.
🏨 Hotels, serviced apartments and landlords already declare you. This rule is about private homes: your partner's place, a friend's spare room, a family homestay.
The ministry says the aim is accurate residence records, not restricting movement. Notifications cover stays of up to 30 days.
