How can we better protect our children and young people in Vanuatu?

Recent events have sparked important conversations about child protection and the safety of our communities.

As young people, parents, community leaders, churches, schools, and stakeholders, what practical solutions can we work on together to prevent child abuse and strengthen the protection of every child?

The Department of Youth and Sports calls on all young people to be part of the conversation. Together, we can promote awareness, encourage reporting, support survivors, and build safer communities where every child can grow up free from abuse.

What actions do you think we should take as a nation? Share your thoughts respectfully in the comments.

At Lakatoro, Malekula 🇻🇺
A judge has ordered the immediate release of 91-year-old Albert Delay on the exact same day he was sentenced for 2 counts of Indecency with a Young Person.
The victims, a 9-year-old girl and her younger brother, are Delay's own grandchildren.
🚨In March 2024, Delay lured them into his home while they were playing outside. He then forced them to hold his p***s while he recorded them on his mobile phone.
🚨Act of Indecency carries a maximum 10-year prison sentence. The court reduced his punishment due to his guilty plea and his "personal factors," which includes a custom reconciliation ceremony where cash and a mat were given to the parents of the victims.
🚪Delay was given discount for the time he already spent in custody awaiting court. With his time officially "served," he was permitted to walk out of the court room as a completely free man.

Strengthening Youth Capacity for Mental Health & Emergency Response

The Department successfully conducted a 3-day Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) Training for 26 youth representatives from Port Vila and surrounding semi-urban communities. The training was delivered in collaboration with the Mental Health Unit of the Ministry of Health, whose officers served as facilitators and shared their expertise throughout the programme.

The training aimed to equip young people with the skills and knowledge needed to support their communities during emergencies, disasters, and other challenging situations through Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS), Psychological First Aid (PFA), community awareness, mental health screening support, and referral pathways.

Throughout the three days, participants learned about:
✅ Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS)
✅ Psychological First Aid (PFA)
✅ Trauma, stress, and resilience
✅ Gender-Based Violence (GBV) awareness and referral pathways
✅ Su***de prevention and stigma reduction
✅ Self-care and community wellbeing
✅ Emergency preparedness and response support.

Participants also developed action plans to promote mental health awareness, support vulnerable individuals, strengthen community resilience, and serve as youth focal points within their respective communities. The training has contributed to building a network of young volunteers who can support government agencies, health services, and communities during emergencies and disasters.

The programme concluded with all 26 participants receiving Certificates of Participation in recognition of their successful completion of the training and their commitment to promoting mental wellbeing and supporting emergency response efforts within their communities.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Mental Health Unit of the Ministry of Health for facilitating the training and sharing their knowledge and experience with our young people. We also thank all participants for their enthusiasm, active engagement, and commitment to becoming champions for mental health and community resilience.
