🏉 Aana Rugby Tournament – Strengthening Partnerships Through Sport 🏉

The British High Commission was delighted to join communities, players and organisers at the Aana Rugby Tournament last Saturday — a fantastic celebration of rugby, faith, and aiga.

Events like these highlight the unique role rugby plays in bringing communities together and nurturing the next generation of Samoan talent.

“In rugby, as in our Christian faith, we’re reminded that we are strongest when we stand together — as one team, one aiga… We need new generations with the flair, passion, and power that have made your players famous throughout the world", said Mr. Andrew Nethercott, British High Commissioner.

The UK is committed to supporting Pacific priorities through partnerships that invest in people and opportunity. In Samoa, this includes backing grassroots sport, supporting pathways for young athletes, and working alongside local partners to help grow rugby from community level through to elite competition.

We are proud to play a small part in supporting the future of Samoan rugby — and to celebrate the enduring bonds between the UK and Samoa.

Fa’afetai lava to the organisers, sponsors and all the teams who made the day such a success. Congratulations to everyone who took part.

The Minister of Health Va'aaoao Salumalo Alofipo recently met with British Commissioner to Samoa, H.E. Andrew Nethercott to discuss healthcare priorities and a way for the U.K. to best provide support to the nation’s medical workers.

In a social media post on their official page, the High Commission points out one of its joint partnership support assistance with the Australian government – financial assistance for a hematology analyzer.

“Knowing the worry Dengue causes local families, the UK—alongside our Australian partners—recently contributed WST 170,000 towards a vital new hematology analyzer to boost local diagnostic capabilities.”

The United Kingdom is no stranger to their contribution to the development of health worldwide and so remains a proud global partner in health.

“Our recent £850 million (3.1bn Tala) pledge to the Global Fund will continue to support critical HIV prevention and care across Samoa and the wider Pacific Islands.”

Gratitude was also articulated to Samoa’s healthcare workers.
“Thank you to all of Samoa's incredible healthcare workers. We are proud to stand with you!”

The Pathway to the Development for Samoa 2026/2027-2030/2031 was recently launched in Upolu and currently in Savai’i.

The plan will guide the way forward for Samoa and is made up of 5 strategic outcomes with the Key Strategic Outcome 1 being, Inclusive Social Development.

This strategy reflects the Government’s unwavering commitment to the health, education, cultural identity and overall well-being of its people.

“It recognises that sustainable development is inseparable from human capital development, and that a nation’s progress is measured not only by economic growth but by the quality of life experienced by every Samoan.”

This strategic outcome has two key priority areas and most relevant to the health of people is the first -public health and wellness with the expected outcomes being accessible quality health care and a healthy population.
