On September 18, Zhang Jun, Chief Justice of the People’s Republic of China and President of the Supreme People’s Court, met in Beijing with a delegation led by Hon. Satiu Simativa Perese, Chief Justice of Samoa.
Zhang Jun welcomed Chief Justice Perese and his delegation to China. He noted that last year marked the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Samoa. Over the past half century, the two countries have consistently respected each other and treated one another as equals. The judicial sectors of both nations have maintained close exchanges and cooperation. This visit by Chief Justice Perese and his delegation will surely elevate judicial exchanges and cooperation between the two countries to deeper levels and higher standards, writing a new chapter in the friendly judicial relations between China and Samoa.
Zhang Jun briefed the visitors on China’s advancement of the rule of law and court work, sharing experience with a focus on the development of digital courts, which was of interest to the Samoan side. He pointed out that in recent years, under the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, China has continuously achieved new progress in advancing the rule of law, with substantial development in court work. The development of China’s digital courts serves as an epitome of the Chinese path to modernization in the judicial field. At present, Chinese courts are earnestly applying Xi Jinping Thought on the Rule of Law. By tapping internal potential and empowering judicial work with technology, courts strive to improve the quality and efficiency of case handling, actively addressing the challenge of a heavy caseload relative to the number of judges, where defining rights and liabilities is difficult and resolving disputes even more so. The Supreme People’s Court of China stands ready to work together with the Samoan side to continuously strengthen exchanges, mutual learning and pragmatic cooperation between judicial organs of the two countries, and advance the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Samoa.
Hon. Perese thanked Zhang Jun for the meeting. He remarked that the talks were cordial, friendly, pragmatic and efficient, further building consensus and deepening mutual friendship. He expressed the hope that this meeting would serve as an opportunity to further deepen judicial cooperation, jointly tackle issues arising in judicial practice of both countries, and continuously improve the well-being of peoples of the two nations.
