Malo lava to the 109 Government of Samoa officials who graduated from the University of the South Pacific (USP) Samoa Campus on 29 May.

Graduates completed programs in procurement, HR, and public sector management, which will contribute to the strengthening of Samoa’s public service now and into the future.

Australian High Commissioner H.E. Will Robinson congratulated graduates, praising their dedication and Australia’s partnership with Samoa’s public service agencies to build skills for effective and accountable service delivery.

Australia is proud to support this achievement through the PSC led Public Sector Strengthening Project and the M*F led Strengthening Fiscal Management Project funded through the Samoa and Australia Tautai Governance for Economic Growth Program.

The Government of Samoa has officially launched two key national strategies: the National Workforce Plan and the Public Administration Sector Plan — important steps toward building a stronger workforce and more effective public service.

Prime Minister Hon. Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Fosi Schmidt highlighted the importance of people at the centre of progress:

“We are strengthening the very engine of our nation’s progress — our people.”

Australia is proud to support this achievement through technical and logistical assistance.

These plans will help Samoa address critical workforce challenges — including skills shortages and labour mobility — while improving public sector performance and service delivery for all Samoans.

Australian High Commissioner H.E. Will Robinson said:

“Australia is proud to support Samoa to invest in Samoa’s greatest asset — its people.”

We look forward to continuing our strong partnership with Samoa in delivering these important priorities.

"You have the most trusted voices closest to communities. The work that you do drives practical solutions across so many fields,” was the message from Australia’s Governor-General, Her Excellency the Honourable Sam Mostyn to civil society partners at a Talanoa on 2 June.

Her Excellency was deeply impressed by the progress made to support Samoa’s most vulnerable in areas of disability inclusion, humanitarian support; and gender equality issues such as domestic violence, sexual and reproductive health, and women’s economic empowerment.

Organisations present included Nuanua O le Alofa Disability Advocacy Organisation, Samoa Faafafine Association, Women in Business Development Inc., Samoa Victim Support Group, Samoa Family Health Association, SENESE Inclusive Education Support Services, Samoa Women’s Association of Growers and Samoa Spinal Network.

Speaking on behalf of the NGO’s, Siliniu Lina Chang said “We are proud of the role that civil society plays in Samoa’s development, and we value the opportunity to work alongside government and development partners, including Australia, to contribute to national priorities and collective wellbeing,”

Australia warmly congratulates the Government and people of Samoa on the launch of the Pathway for the Development of Samoa (PDS) 2026–2031 (PDS 2) — a forward-looking vision for sustainable and inclusive national development.

Australia is proud to be Samoa’s largest bilateral development partner and welcomes the priorities outlined in PDS 2, particularly in strengthening good governance, promoting social justice, advancing climate resilience, and ensuring inclusive development for all. These are mirrored in Australia’s international development policies.

Through Australia’s Budget Support, the Tautai Governance for Economic Growth Program, the Tautua Human Development for All Program, the Samoa Australia Police Partnership and via multiple Australia-funded UN and regional programs, we look forward to working with the Government of Samoa to:

• Strengthen transparent and accountable institutions
• Improve equitable access to services and opportunities
• Build resilience to climate change and in Samoa’s economy
• Promote gender equality and inclusion for youth, women, and people with disabilities.

Australia is committed to working closely with Samoa to achieve shared development goals and deliver lasting impacts for communities across the country.

Australia is proud to work alongside Pacific partners to build a safer, healthier, and more resilient region.

At Australia’s High Commission in Samoa, the Governor-General was proud to present certificates to four outstanding graduates of the Australian Border Force Pacific Women’s Professional Development Program – Advancing Intelligence Management course.

Delivered in partnership with RMIT University and the Oceania Customs Organisation, and led by Michelle Bond, ABF Inspector and First Secretary at the Australian High Commission, the program supports leadership and professional growth for women from Samoa’s Ministry of Customs while strengthening regional cooperation and expertise.

The Governor-General and Mr Beckett also joined Samoa’s Minister of Health, Va’aaoao Salumalo Alofipo, at Samoa’s Pharmaceutical Warehouse to hand over Australian-funded e-health equipment. Supporting Samoa’s digital health transformation, the equipment will help strengthen regional health security, preparedness, and resilience, delivering shared benefits across the Pacific.

People-to-people connections are at the heart of the Australia–Samoa relationship.

During their visit to Samoa, the Governor-General and Mr Beckett met individuals and organisations whose contributions continue to deepen our partnership, with the support of the Australian Government.

They were delighted to spend an afternoon with Australian Volunteers Program and Australia Awards alumni, whose contributions reflect the strength of the personal and professional links that connect our two countries, and demonstrate Australia’s commitment to supporting Samoa’s development through skills-sharing and service.

At a talanoa, they were introduced to the work of Australian Government-supported organisations providing critical services and deep care to empower Samoan communities, grounded in local expertise, experience and leadership — across the health of women and girls, families and students, people living with disabilities, as well as those growing businesses and entrepreneurial endeavours.

The organisations included:
✨ Samoa Family Health Association
✨ Nuanua O Le Alofa, Disability Advocacy Organisation in Samoa
✨ Sāmoa Fa'afāfine Association Incorporated
✨ Women In Business Development Inc

The Governor-General and Mr Beckett were honoured to be guests of the Government of Samoa for the nation’s 64th Independence Day celebrations, including a church service, parade, and the ceremonial opening of Samoa’s parliamentary buildings.

🇦🇺🇼🇸

During the parade, they joined Samoa’s Head of State, His Highness Tuimaleali’ifano Vaʻaletoʻa Sualauvi II, Her Highness Masiofo Faʻamausili Leinafo Tuimalealiʻifano, Prime Minister La’aulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Fosi Schmidt, Australian High Commissioner Will Robinson, and representatives from New Zealand, Fiji, American Samoa, Tonga and Tokelau.

The parade was the largest community celebration of Samoan independence, joy and pride, attended by tens of thousands with thousands more marching — representing schools, community and government. The Royal Samoa Police Band was also joined by members of the Royal Australian Navy, marching side by side.

🏢 The Governor-General then joined the Prime Minister for the ceremonial opening of the new parliamentary precinct. In her remarks, she spoke of Australia and Samoa’s shared commitment to strong democratic institutions and governance, reflected in the new Australian Government-supported Parliament of Samoa and Legislative Assembly Office buildings.

The ceremony included a ribbon-cutting, the planting of a fetau tree, and a performance by Samoan-Australian Taitu’uga Wesche and his sons, featuring First Nations Gungarri culture and highlighting the enduring relationship between the people of Samoa and Australia.

🚣‍♀️ Later, the Governor-General joined the Prime Minister and international representatives for lunch before cheering on participants of a traditional Samoan fautasi (longboat) race with Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, the Honorable Ale Vena Ale and thousands from the local community, congratulating rowers including Australian-Samoan Mares Junior Tim’e.

🤝 On behalf of all Australians, the Governor-General and Mr Beckett congratulate the people of Samoa on 64 years of independence.
