It was a beautiful day in Brooklyn last Sunday, a day fit to honor the legacy of the late, great Ms. Barbara Ann Smith.

Ms. Barbara was the 83rd Precinct Community Council President for 18 years and was also an essential member of Community Board 4.

Barbara dedicated her life to the advancement of the Bushwick community. It was a privilege to uplift her story at today’s street co-naming ceremony.

In the wake of the 2020 Black Lives Matter uprising, New Yorkers voted to establish the independent Commission on Racial Equity (CORE) and integrate racial equity planning into how we budget, govern, and hold our agencies accountable.

Next week, I'm chairing the NYC Council's Committee on Civil and Human Rights to dig into the preliminary Racial Equity Plan published earlier this year. We’ll look into how this work is going and what it will take to see real, measurable impact in the lives of New Yorkers.
