Why trudge through 40 inches of snow in subzero temperatures to an SMU Community Center? We asked a few local teens from our Pulyny Center to share their thoughts- and their responses beautifully capture why we do what we do.
“Despite the weather conditions and power outages, I come to the Center to help those who need it. For me, the Pulyny Community Center is a place where a sincere desire to help turns into real actions. These actions strengthen our spirit and give us confidence that together we will stand strong while supporting everyone who is going through difficult times.”
“I come to the Center even without electricity and when the weather is bad, because here I can simply be myself. Every meeting has its own special atmosphere that is hard to describe in words. It truly feels comfortable here, even in times like these.”
“I come to the Pulyny Community Center even without electricity and in such weather because here I feel support, safety, and warmth from people. For me, this is a place where I can talk, play games, start new conversations, and just be myself. I am motivated by the atmosphere, my friends, and the understanding that even in difficult conditions, we can stay together and support one another.”
“I continue to come even during power outages and severe weather because here I can enjoy communicating with friends and share warmth with those who need it. Honestly, during this time of power outages, no heating at home, no way to start the generator, warm tea and cookies are what make the Center a particularly warm and welcoming place.”
Ministry, outreach, support, and yes, warm tea and cookies, bring hope and light to the coldest of days.
