Happy Black Business Month! 🖤

This month, we’re celebrating the power of Black entrepreneurship and the legacy of Black economic self-determination.

From the founding of Freedmen’s Town—Houston’s first self-sustaining African American neighborhood after emancipation, established through the vision and leadership of Black pioneers like Reverend Jack Yates—to the more than 3.5 million Black-owned businesses across the United States today, we honor the ingenuity, resilience, and opportunities we’ve created for ourselves and future generations.

Do you have a favorite Black-owned business? Tag them in the comments so we can amplify their work! 🖤

Today, we honor the legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers—the Black servicemen whose courage, discipline, and service helped shape both American history and Houston’s story.

Established in 1866, the 9th and 10th Cavalry and the 24th and 25th Infantry became the first permanent all-Black regiments in the U.S. Army. Though they served with distinction, they did so while facing segregation, unequal treatment, and discrimination from the very institution they fought to defend.

Their story is also part of Houston’s history. The 24th Infantry was stationed at Camp Logan, on the edge of what is now Memorial Park, where their presence—and the events that followed—left a lasting mark on the city.

This Buffalo Soldiers Day, we remember not only their military service, but their resilience, sacrifice, and enduring contributions to the ongoing story of Black freedom, leadership, and perseverance.

Nearly a century apart, the 14th Amendment and the Black Power Conference reflected a continuing struggle for Black freedom, rights, and self-determination.

From constitutional protections to demands for political, economic, and cultural power, the fight for Black liberation has always been about more than access—it has been about the power to define and shape our own futures.

Step up to the plate in our new "Mother Ward" merch line. ⚾🖤

Inspired by BLACKBALL | Baseball, Barbeque & Blues, this limited-edition collection celebrates Freedmen's Town—Houston's Mother Ward and home base of a powerful Black baseball legacy.

In Freedmen's Town, baseball was never just a game. It was resilience, community, innovation, and joy. At a time when Black players were "blackballed" elsewhere, the game brought people together and helped shape a thriving community. The BLACKBALL exhibition traces that legacy from the neighborhood's sandlots to the Negro Leagues and beyond.

Grab your shirt while supplies last at the Freedmen's Town Visitor Center and stop by the Row House Galleries to experience the exhibition, curated by Seba R. Suber and Sharon L. Fletcher.

📍 Limited quantities available.

Today, we celebrate 713 Day by celebrating the people and places that made Houston what it is.

Originally assigned as Houston’s first area code in 1947, 713 has grown into a symbol of hometown pride—shaped by the communities, artists, entrepreneurs, and neighborhoods that define this city.
That story includes Freedmen’s Town.

Founded by formerly enslaved people after emancipation, this historic neighborhood became the birthplace of Black Houston and laid the foundation for generations of culture, leadership, and community. From Freedmen’s Town to Third Ward, Fifth Ward, Acres Homes, and Sunnyside, these communities have left an enduring mark on Houston’s identity.
Because if we’re celebrating Houston today, let’s remember the people and places that made Houston what it is.

Happy 713 Day, Houston. 🤘🏾

On this day in history—July 12, 1976—Houston native Barbara Jordan became the first Black woman to deliver the keynote address at a Democratic National Convention, making history with a powerful call for democracy, equality, and the common good.

Born in Houston's Fifth Ward and a graduate of Texas Southern University, Jordan's groundbreaking leadership helped shape our nation's history. Her legacy is part of the broader story of Black Houston—a story that continues in Freedmen's Town.

This month, visit the Barbara Jordan Monument outside the African American History Research Center at the Gregory School and take a moment to reflect on the life and lasting impact of one of Houston's greatest trailblazers.
