SOGIE? So What?

Here at Angat Buhay Singles, naniniwala kami na ang bawa’t isa sa atin ay entitled sa patas na mga karapatan at pagkakataon, at kalayaan mula sa diskriminasyon. Sa pagtatapos ng Buwan ng Pride, nais naming bigyan ng focus ang mga topics tungo sa pag-usad ng karapatang pang-LGBTIQIA+.

Isa sa mga basic concepts na naririnig ng marami na parating kadikit ng mga LGBTQIA+ topics ay ang SOGIE o SOGIESC. Marahil narinig niyo na ang SOGIE Equality Bill na hanggang ngayon ay hindi parin naipapasa sa Kongreso. Pero ano nga ba ang SOGIE? Bakit ba kailangan i-define yan? This is not my issue, why should I care?

Naiintindihan namin na iba-iba ang level ng ating kaalaman sa mga topics na ito kaya naman to help those of us who are still learning or are too afraid to ask questions, we’ve prepared a short summary of definitions below.

What is SOGIE?

SOGIE is an acronym for S*xual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression. Ito ay ang shortened version ng mas mahabang acronym na SOGIESC. The SC stands for S*x Characteristics.

Ang S*x Characteristics (SC) ay tumutukoy sa mga katangiang pisikal na related sa s*x, halimbawa, ang ari or genitalia, reproductive anatomy, chromosomes, hormones at iba pa. Karaniwang classification nito ay female, male or inters*x.

Ang gender ay ang mga katangiang nakasanayan ng madla batay sa kanilang kasarian – halimbawa: mga pag-uugali, katangian at kaisipan. Ang bawat kultura ay may mga pamantayan tungkol sa paraan na dapat kumilos ang mga tao batay sa kanilang kasarian. Naaiba ito sa S*x Characteristics dahil ito ay tungkol sa kung paano ka inaasahang kumilos, dahil sa iyong s*x characteristics.

Ang Gender Identity (GI) ay kung paano nakikita ng isang tao ang sariling niyang gender. Ang malalim na pakiramdam sa sarili na ito ay maaaring tumukoy sa pagiging woman, man, transgender, genderqueer, non-binary, at iba pa.

Kadalasan, nahahanay ang S*x Characteristics (SC) sa Gender Identity (GI) – halimbawa, a female who identifies as a woman, or a male who identifies as a man – ang tawag dito ay cisgender or cis. Maraming ding pagkakataon na ang taong female ay nag-iidentify as a man or kaya naman a male na nag-iidentify as a woman – ang tawag dito ay transgender or trans.

Ang Gender Expression (E) ay kung papaano pinipresenta ng isang tao ang kanyang gender. Kabilang dito ang pananamit, hairstyle, accessories, cosmetics, mannerisms, pananalita, pag-uugali, mga pangalan at personal references. Ito ay maaring umayon o hindi sa kanilang Gender Identity (GI).

Ang S*xual Orientation (SO) ay ang kapasidad ng bawat isang nilalang ng magkaroon ng malalim at romantikong emosyonal at s*xual na pagmamahal sa kanyang kapwa tao na different gender, same gender or more than one gender. Maraming klase ng S*xual Orientation (SO) – ang madalas nating marinig ay ang heteros*xual (person is attracted to a person with different gender), homos*xual (person who is attracted to a person with the same gender) at bis*xual (person who is attracted to more than one gender). Bakit Pa Kailangan Yan?

Habang tumatagal, nagbabago ang mga kaalaman natin sa mundo at sa mga taong nakatira dito. Importante matutunan ang mga konsepto ng SOGIE dahil naliliwagan tayo at namumulat tayo sa sitwasyon ng mga kapwa tao natin. Humans are not binary – we are complex, diverse beings and we cannot be simplified into two neat piles and two categories.

Why Should I Care?

Naikakabit ang term na SOGIE sa mga LGBTQIA+ groups dahil sila ang minority na nangangailangan ng tulong na maisulong ang kanilang karapatang pantao. Pero sa totoo lang, lahat tayo ay may SOGIE. Halimbawa, kung and isang tao ay may s*x characteristics na male, gender identity na man at ang s*xual orientation niya ay heteros*xual – yan ang SOGIE niya. Kahit hindi kayo part ng LGBTIQ+ community, SOGIE still applies to you.

Higit sa lahat, ang hinangad nating lahat ay mabuhay ng mapayapa, masaya at maunlad – ito ay makakamit kung lahat tayo ay patas sa pagtingin ng lipunan at ng batas at hindi natin maisasapatupad ito kung hindi natin iintindihin at gagalangin and bawat isa.

Many people think that being immunized against COVID-19 will actually protect them from being infected. Among many studies, however, this is definitely NOT the case. Even being boosted with a fourth dose of vaccine cannot fully protect us from being infected. In fact, one recent study identified that because SARS-COV-2 is highly mutated, the current mRNA vaccines we have are only 14-20% effective against the latest strains!

This latest study by Al-Aly, et. al. (2022) shows that people who have been infected by COVID-19 have greater risks for acute and chronic outcomes. The study says that: "those with reinfection exhibited an increased risk of all-cause mortality (Hazard Ratio (HR) 2.14; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.97, 2.33) and excess burden of allcause mortality estimated at 23.8 (95% CI: 18.9, 29.2) per 1000 persons at 6 months."

Basically, it says that it's much better to NEVER be infected with COVID-19. People who have been reinfected have a greater risk of hospitalization as well as cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and mental health disorders. The greater the number of infections, the greater the risk to one's current and long-term health.
I'm not telling you to lock yourselves at home. But even though we now do have vaccines, it's still more prudent to stay at home more often.

My own suggestions as a medical doctor remain similar to what I've been saying before:
Be vaccinated or boosted whenever it's possible, because even if the fourth dose offers only 20% protection, that's still better than nothing.

When meeting with people, try to limit meet-ups to outdoor get-togethers or al fresco dining. As much as possible, limit yourself to meeting two people maximum.
Wear at least a KF94 mask when going to malls or anywhere indoors. If there are N95 masks available, use those instead. Prefer open-air spaces over airconditioned spaces.

People can try to pretend that the pandemic is over, but as COVID-19 is studied more and more, humanity has to understand that the long-term sequelae or effects of being infected with COVID-19 cannot be comforting to anyone. To many people, it's simply just not a cold that will go away: not only will it weaken your immune system, it has been known to cause brain and heart damage, too.

As protection from the immunization wanes, infections will also rise. I hope that you will all be careful to avoid being infected, and avoid infecting others, too.
