The Bonfield Seed Lending Library was featured in the Seeds of Diversity Newsletter.

Do you know of any Seed Libraries in your neck of the woods? We want to know about them, too! Throughout 2024, we’ll be continuing our series with journeys through the east coast, the west coast, and the prairies; to youth initiatives and schools, rural communities and urban neighbourhoods.

Time to get the seeds on!!! We have some cold weather crops seeds raring to get out of the cabinets.

As always the Seed Lending Library can use the addition of new seeds. If you opened a packet and didn't use all your seeds, donate some to the Seed Lending Library.

Sunflowers....

Every year people are looking for sunflower seeds. It is so easy to save sunflower seeds.

Wait until the foliage starts to turn brown and remove the whole head from the plant. Hang the head somewhere to dry before harvesting the seeds. You know the seeds are ready when they are loose. If you worry about losing seeds, place a paper or mesh bag over the heads. When the head is dry and the seeds loose, place the head over a bucket and brush the dry seeds off. Remove any plant matter and spread on a tray to allow to fully dry before storing for replanting next year.

Label with the variety and the year harvested.

The Seed Lending Library would greatly appreciate some of your seeds. Place some in an envelope or baggie, label with variety and year and bring it to the Bonfield Public Library.

It is seed saving time. Help us improve our Seed Lending Library stock by returning some seeds you borrowed and bring in new varieties.

The more generations of seeds saved from crops grown in our region the hardier the varieties become to our area.

As your crops ripen and you harvest think about saving the seeds from the heritage seeds you sowed in the spring.
