Had a fantastic day volunteering to help the remove invasive .

We had students do their capstone project on a new method of removing scotch broom.

The idea is to cut the broom with a chainsaw or loppers as low to the ground as possible - and this must be done when the plant is in the flowering stage.

When you time it right, anecdotal evidence from a group in British Columbia () has shown that this can be much faster, cheaper and drastically reduces soil disturbance (compared to removing roots).

Thanks to the folks of the Willow Creek Fire Safe Council for helping put this together, the hospitality, and to all the volunteers that showed up!

This is the first on many volunteer days that we are trying to coordinate across the county in hopes to keep the momentum going in order to protect our communities and forests.

If anyone would like to volunteer for future events or to share ideas/collaborate, please reach out.

Want to learn how to protect your home and community from wildfire through smart gardening? There's so much you can do in your own yard to reduce risk and increase safety.

Join Yana Valachovic on Saturday, April 18 from noon to 1:30 p.m. to learn about defensible space, fire-resistant landscaping, fire hazard reduction and more.

Valachovic serves as UC Cooperative Extension’s Forest Advisor and County Director for Humboldt and Del Norte counties and as the University of California's Fire Network Community Resiliency and Built Environment Program Lead.

At this event, she’ll share key insights on landscaping design, building maintenance and practical strategies that can make a real difference in protecting your property from wildfire. You'll also hear about her latest research findings and learn about low-cost actions you can take to safeguard your home and family through firesafe garden design and upkeep.

This free event takes place at the Humboldt County Public Library in Eureka, located at 1313 Third St. Pre-registration is not required.

Save the date!

April 11th we will be helping the Willow Creek Fire Safe Council clear invasive scotch broom in Willow Creek.

We are trying a new, innovative way to remove the broom that we recently learned from some folks in Canada.

Cal Poly students are also going to be doing their capstone on this project as we are trying to see what method works best for Willow Creek.

Please share the word! And hope to see you there!

--A fascinating case study - Frontline Wildfire Defense Systems--ROOFTOP SPRINKLERS

When the 2025 Los Angeles wildfires burned more than 57,000 acres and destroyed over 16,000 structures, it forced a hard reality check across California:

Traditional approaches alone aren’t enough anymore.

New wildfire defense technology — like the Frontline Wildfire Defense systems — were tested under real conditions.

59 out of 61 protected homes survived.

That’s a 96% success rate during one of the most destructive urban wildfire events in state history.

This is what layered wildfire protection looks like.

As wildfire seasons grow longer and insurance markets tighten, landowners across Humboldt County and the North Coast need more tools than ever.

Technology like this is changing the conversation from:

“Can we survive wildfire?” -- to --“How do we live safely with fire?”

If you’re curious about wildfire protection options for your home, ranch, or business — we’re always happy to talk.

Since we have several new followers (Thank you!) I wanted to reintroduce myself and share a bit about how Forestscapes came to be.

My name is Joe Snipes, and I’m the owner of Forestscapes LLC, based out of McKinleyville, CA. I started this business with one of my best friends—both of us former wildland firefighters and both deeply passionate about forest management, arboriculture, and helping out the north coast community. We believed in a different way of managing our forests and trees: one that prioritized long-term health, fire resilience, and community safety.

In 2021, we had a tough split, and I’ve been running Forestscapes solo ever since. That period was a turning point. I’ve since been fortunate to have some incredible leaders join the crew, including Victor Perez, Dan Bertel, and Jason Wentworth, who’ve helped elevate Forestscapes to the next level.

Some of our qualifications:

-Licensed D-49 Tree Contractor (CA License #1075353)
-ISA Certified Arborist (WE-13357A)
-Humboldt County FLASH (Fire Adapted and Safe Homes) inspector
-Tree Care Industry Association – Certified Tree Care Specialist
-Degree in Forestry & Natural Resources, College of the Redwoods, with Honors
-Licensed Timber Operator – B013609
-NWCG Wildland Fire Certifications – I-100, 1-300, S130, S131, S190, S211, S212, S215, S219, S271, S290, S410, L180, L280
-8+ years running Forestscapes, serving federal, state, local, tribal, and nonprofit clients

From residential tree removal to fuels reduction to tree planting and invasive species removal, our goal has always been to make Northern California’s forests and communities safer, healthier, and more resilient. We’re committed to delivering high-quality work while building a strong, skilled local workforce.

Thanks for being part of the journey—we’re just getting started. Much more on the horizon!
