We now have been upgraded to a Tropical Storm as a reminder VDOT monitors the bridges and will post wind advisories. IF we reach 45 mph sustained winds VDOT issues a bridge closure.

Please plan ahead now we are expecting large amounts of rain along with wind. Make sure you are prepared to report an outage and all of your cell phones are fully charged now.
VDOT crews will work 24 hours a day as needed, in alternating shifts, to address any safety hazards on state-maintained roads and bridges. Tree removal contractors have been placed on standby to assist VDOT with debris removal as needed.

What Travelers Should Know

Never drive across a flooded roadway. The underlying road or bridge may be damaged or completely washed away beneath flood waters, and a few inches of water can sweep vehicles downstream. Turn around, don’t drown!
Do not try to move or drive around a barricade.
Avoid flood-prone areas, especially along creeks and other low-lying areas.
If you come across a downed power line, do not try to move it. Contact your local authorities.
Be alert for tree limbs and other debris in the roadway. Even small branches and other debris can damage a car or cause the driver to lose control.
Keep headlights on while it’s raining: it’s the law.
Report downed trees, flooding, or other roadway hazards to VDOT’s Customer Service Center at 1-800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623) or online at https://my.vdot.virginia.gov.
High Winds Protocol for Major Bridges

VDOT will monitor sustained winds on major river crossings in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula:
Robert O. Norris Bridge, which carries Route 3 over the Rappahannock River between Lancaster and Middlesex counties
Downing Bridge, which carries Route 360 over the Rappahannock River between Richmond County and the Town of Tappahannock
Route 223 bridge over Milford Haven, which connects mainland Mathews County with Gwynn's Island
Eltham Bridge, which carries Route 30/Route 33 traffic over the Pamunkey River and connects the Town of West Point and New Kent County
Lord Delaware Bridge, which carries Route 33 over the Mattaponi River and connects the Town of West Point and King and Queen County
If sustained winds reach 30 mph over a period of 30 minutes, or there are frequent wind gusts of 45 mph or greater, VDOT will post a high winds advisory notice on these bridges. High-profile vehicles such as tractor-trailers, box trucks, and large vans and SUVs are advised to not cross these bridges when a high winds advisory is posted. Trucks carrying small or empty loads may be especially at risk.

When sustained winds reach 45 mph or above over a period of 15 minutes, VDOT crews will post a bridge closure notice. However, bridges will not be physically barricaded.

Notices will be posted on message boards staged at the bridges, and communicated through VDOT news releases and social media.

Northern Neck Ferry Service

The Merry Point Ferry in Lancaster County and the Sunnybank Ferry in Northumberland County will not operate today and Saturday, Sept. 23, due to forecasted weather. These ferries do not operate on Sundays. They carry a maximum of 16 tons and 6 passengers.

Regional Law Enforcement Officials Urge Parents to Be Aware of Teenager’s Online Presence

A critical and timely message from Fredericksburg Police Chief Layton, King George County Sheriff Giles, Spotsylvania County Sheriff Harris, Stafford County Sheriff Decatur, and City of Fredericksburg Sheriff Foster.

Smartphones have forever changed how we communicate, and while there are many benefits to having a small computer in the palm of your hand, there are also many negatives, especially for teenagers.

Across the region, law enforcement agencies have seen how one social media post or video can quickly spiral out of control, resulting in violence, fights, and even homicide. The trajectory for our youth when they engage in this type of online behavior is detrimental and affects their family, friends, classmates, teams, etc.
All of us are committed to keeping our youth safe. Still, we need you, the parents and caregivers, to help us by being aware and monitoring your children's digital footprint and talking to them about the ramifications of a loaded social media post.

While you may not be able to monitor all of your child's activities, there are things you can do to prevent and protect your child from harmful digital behavior:

• Monitor their social media sites, apps, and browsing history

• Review or reset your child's phone location and privacy settings

• Follow or friend your teen on social media sites or have another trusted adult follow them

• Establish rules about appropriate digital behavior, content, and apps

• Know your child's user names and passwords for email and social media

• Install a digital monitoring app or software on your child's phone that restricts content, blocks domains, and allows you to view your child's online activity, including social media, without looking at your child's device every day

• Stay up-to-date on the latest apps, social media platforms, and digital slang used by children and teens
