Highlight of the Day: Bertha Parker

Bertha was born on August 30, 1907 in Chautauqua, New York of Abenaki and Seneca descent. Her mother was an actress and a father who was the president of the Society for American Archaeology. After her parents divorce, Bertha and her mother moved to Los Angeles and performed with the Ringling Bros as part of their Pocahontas show. Once Bertha became older her uncle who was also an archaeologist hired her on as a camp cook and expedition secretary, and even taught her methods on the field. On her spare time Bertha would explore the caves and ended up discovering the skull of the extinct giant ground sloth, along with human tools. This discovery lead to support from the California Institute of Washington and the Carnegie Institution of Washington. Bertha also discovered Corn Creek after finding a fossil camel bone from a lake bed. After the expeditions Parker went on to work as a assistant in Archaeology and Ethology at the Southwest Museum, and wrote several articles for the Masterkev from the 1930s-1960s. Making Bertha Parker the first Native-American archaeologist.

We welcome our new friend KIRBY a Leopard Gecko- also known as Eublepharis Macularious

The Leopard gecko is a native of the middle east. An adult gecko could grow anywhere from 7-10 inches long. The Super Giant gecko could grow up to a foot long and over five ounces. The lifespan of the Leopard Gecko runs between 6-10 years but an adult male can grow up to 20 years old! Leopard geckos are insectivores so they eat crickets, worms and many other small insects, when threatened or not properly cared for the gecko could detach his tail and eat it to restore the lost fat.

Inspired by Taylor Nicole Dean's video on her snakes doing things, I figured I'd show you guys a few things Leopard Geckos do :) MERCH https://www.jinxycatin...

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness, we would like to highlight the work of Marie Claire King.

Dr. Marie Claire King is a Geneticist and Professor at the University of Washington. Dr. Claire King made a significant breakthrough in science when she discovered the gene linked to breast and ovarian cancer. In the early 1970s breast cancer was considered a virus, King predicted that breast cancer was instead genetic. By the 1980s King was able to convince NCI ( National Cancer Institute) to add questions regarding family health history in surveys pertaining to breast cancer. The surveys along with research and experiments resulted in King confirming there may indeed be a gene causing breast cancer. King spent the next 17 years locating this gene which we now know to be BRCA1 located on chromosome 17. This discovery made a huge impact in science and shifted our views and research on breast cancer. Dr. Marie Claire King went on to win many prestigious awards for her work including the Lasker award in 2014 and the National Medal of Science in 2016 presented to her by former President Barack Obama. Dr. Marie King continues her work with biology as well as a political advocate.
