On International Women's Day, NHRO joins the global observance of the United Nations theme for 2026: “Rights. Justice. Action. for All Women and Girls.”

The phrase “for all” invites an important question — who remains least visible in conversations around women’s rights?

In reflecting on this theme within the Indian context, NHRO chose to centre attention on groups of women whose rights often remain underrepresented in public discourse: s*x workers, women with disabilities, tribal women, and rural women.

Data helps illustrate why this focus matters.
Nearly 73% of working women in rural India are engaged in agriculture, yet less than 14% of landholders are women.
India is home to over 26 million persons with disabilities, many of whom face barriers in education, employment and accessibility.
Indigenous and tribal communities continue to experience disparities in access to healthcare, education and economic opportunities.
Meanwhile, thousands of women working in the informal economy — including s*x workers — navigate complex legal and social conditions that often limit their access to protection and social security.

These realities remind us that the experience of rights is not uniform.

By bringing these communities into focus this year, NHRO hopes to highlight a simple but important principle: the promise of Rights, Justice and Action must extend to every woman and every girl — including those whose voices are least represented.

NHRO wishes everyone a thoughtful and reflective International Women’s Day.

On the occasion of the 77th Republic Day of India, NHRO, in collaboration with People’s Care Foundation, organised a Constitutional Awareness & Creative Expression Initiative as part of its continued efforts to promote civic awareness and public participation.

The initiative engaged children and their parents in meaningful conversations around the Constitution of India, constitutional values, civic responsibility, and social welfare. Through creative expression, children reflected their understanding of the nation and its ideals, while parents were encouraged to actively guide and educate them about their rights, duties, and the importance of an informed society.

As part of the programme, children were recognised and awarded across multiple categories, celebrating creativity, participation, and awareness.

At NHRO, we believe that constitutional awareness begins early and is strengthened through consistent community engagement. This Republic Day initiative reflects our commitment to nurturing informed, conscious, and responsible future citizens.

Jai Hind.

Are we truly informed — or only selectively informed?

In a democratic society, an informed citizenry is essential for the healthy functioning of the nation. Many people assume that regular consumption of news automatically leads to awareness. However, information is shaped not only by what is reported, but also by what is omitted, prioritised, or framed in a particular manner. When news is presented without adequate context, balance, or depth, it limits the public’s ability to fully understand social and national realities.

The Constitution of India, under Article 19(1)(a), guarantees the Right to Freedom of Speech and Expression. Judicial interpretations have consistently affirmed that this right also includes the Right to Receive Information. Citizens can exercise free expression meaningfully only when they have access to fair, accurate, and diverse sources of information. When information is partial, sensationalised, or selectively presented, the citizen’s capacity to form independent and informed opinions is quietly compromised.

This is not an allegation against any government, political entity, or media organisation. It is a recognition of a broader concern that affects democratic participation itself. The absence of complete and balanced information does not restrict speech directly, but it influences public perception in subtle ways, thereby weakening informed choice — a foundational element of democracy.

Being informed is not merely about knowing headlines or participating in televised debates. True awareness requires critical engagement, verification, and exposure to multiple perspectives. An active citizen questions, reflects, and forms conclusions independently rather than passively consuming information.

At NHRO, our objective is to promote awareness of constitutional rights and encourage responsible citizenship. Protecting human rights begins with ensuring that citizens understand their right to information and their role in safeguarding democratic values.

Awareness is not opposition.
Awareness is empowerment.

Today marks 77 years of International Human Rights Day.
NHRO is not celebrating — we are recommitting.
Human rights demand daily work, daily protection, and daily accountability.

This year, we choose reflection over ritual.
We choose voice over silence.
We choose reform over symbolism.

NHRO stands with every citizen whose rights still need protection, dignity, and access.
This is our renewed commitment — today and every day.

NHRO — Reborn for Reform.
