Conservation Connection: How to Preserve a Wedding Dress
Wedding season is in full swing. Whether it’s you or someone you love celebrating a new marriage or a milestone anniversary, there are many happy memories surrounding this celebration of love.

A wedding dress holds some of these treasured memories. Textiles can prove tricky to preserve as the natural fibers are more susceptible to wear and damage over time. For this garment to be preserved for the future, special care needs to be taken now.

Did you know that residue from sweat and dirt will darken over time and leave stains which corrode fabric? It’s important to properly clean a wedding dress before placing it in storage. Once it’s completely clean and dry, fold the garment with plenty of acid-free tissue to prevent creasing, and store in an acid-free box. The box can then be stored in an area with stable temperature and humidity levels like a closet. Avoid areas like basements and attics that are more susceptible to water damage, pest activity, and fluctuations in temperature and humidity.

Marion Gertrude Willson, shown here, married Charles K. Graham 100 years ago on June 12, 1926. This photo and her dress are preserved in the museum’s collection.

Italian Heritage Month
June is Italian Heritage Month, a time to celebrate Italian culture and history in our community.

In the early 1900s, many of the labourers at Windmill Point Quarries were Americans of Italian descent who were transported from Buffalo each day by barge. By 1938, there were enough Italians in Fort Erie to form an Italo-Canadian Club.

By 1978, the president of the club, Guy Violino, noted that there were 2,700 Italian families in Fort Erie. The club was meant to keep the Italian community close and preserve their heritage for their children and future generations.

The photo here shows an invitation to an Oath of Citizenship ceremony at the Italo-Canadian Hall in Fort Erie (1975).

If you have photographs or written oral histories related to Italian families or businesses in Fort Erie, please contact the Fort Erie Historical Museum - https://bit.ly/4vqBb2k
