Myrtle Beach City Government Welcome to the City of Myrtle Beach's official page! In 1526, they established the first European settlement in the U.S. about 30 miles to the south.

The City of Myrtle Beach is “First in Service.”

The City of Myrtle Beach is located in the heart of the Grand Strand, a 60-mile stretch of natural beauty on South Carolina's northeastern coast. Our 35,000-plus permanent residents and millions of visitors enjoy wide beaches, warm weather and an incredible range of entertainment, nightlife, golf, shopping, dining and live theatre. History records that a party of Spaniards from Hispaniola were the earliest tourists here, landing first about 50 miles north of present-day Myrtle Beach. That settlement, San Miguel de Guadalupe, was abandoned the next year when they returned to Hispaniola, but the area had been discovered. In the next three centuries, the region's population grew very slowly. By the late 1800s and early 1900s, people began to "vacation" here, although it was quite rustic. Houses and camps were sparse, and there were only few permanent residents at the turn of the century. But, drawn by the ocean, sand and trees, people began to call Myrtle Beach "home" as the 1900s progressed. Myrtle Beach was incorporated in 1938 and became a city in 1957, when the permanent population first topped 5,000. By the way, the name "Myrtle Beach" comes from the wax myrtle, an abundant local shrub, and was chosen in a name-the-town contest in 1900. "Edgewater" finished in second place. Previously, the area had been known as Long Bay, Withers and New Town. For nearly 50 years, Myrtle Beach was a military town, first as home to the U.S. Army Air Corps in the 1940s, and then to the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base beginning in the 1950s. The base closed in 1993, and the property has since been redeveloped as the Market Common District, complete with a Grand Park, recreation fields, a large lake and plenty of walking and bicycling trails. Today, Myrtle Beach is a well-known destination for vacationers from around the country, Canada and abroad. The city's staff is dedicated to being "First in Service" and ready to provide assistance and answer questions. We hope you find this page enjoyable and useful. Myrtle Mile just barely beat the rain this morning!

Congratulations to everyone who ran in the second annual Myrtle Mile by running around Grand Park Lake in The Market Common.

The timing was perfect as a cold, light rain made its way into the area shortly after everyone finished.

Myrtle Beach enjoyed another stretch of summer-like weather this week, and that’s the topic of our Photos of the Week! With plenty of sunshine and temperatures reaching the 80s, summer attire is still in full swing. While it’s always bittersweet to say “sayonara” to summer, we’re ready to welcome cooler temperatures and the arrival of fall in the Grand Strand!

The City of Myrtle Beach is exploring the possibility of changing the way members of City Council represent the public.

City Council voted during the Tuesday, October 13 meeting to hold informational meetings for the public to attend so they can learn more about how a potential change would work.

Currently, all six members of City Council and the Mayor hold at-large seats, meaning all seven represent all of the city.

At City Council’s direction, the city will explore the possibility of switching to a ward/district/hybrid system. There are several possibilities for what that could look like. Examples include…

- Some City Council members come from/represent a district/ward while others are at-large

- All City Council members (except the Mayor) come from/represent a district/ward

- Everything stays the same where all City Council members are at-large

So what are the next steps?

The city will hold informational meetings for the public. The dates are TBD, but they will likely take place toward the end of 2026/beginning of 2027. These meetings will be an opportunity for you to learn about what would go into a potential change.

After the meetings conclude, City Council will have to decide what to do.

One possibility is a referendum on the November 2027 ballot that would let voters express whether they want to switch to wards/districts, which would then lead to those districts being used for the first time in the November 2029 election.

Another possibility as mentioned above is that City Council decides to keep the current system where all are at-large members.

Stay tuned for when the informational meetings will take place.
