Happy Juneteenth, !

On this day in 1865, Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation, more than two years after it was issued.

Today, Juneteenth honors the resilience and contributions of Black Americans and celebrates the freedom and progress that continue to shape our nation.

What happens when you bring together community leaders, nonprofits, businesses, volunteers, and residents at a ballpark on a beautiful afternoon?

You get United Way of Summit & Medina's Report to the Community. County Executive Ilene Shapiro was proud to join partners from across our region today at the Akron RubberDucks stadium, 7/17 Credit Union Park to celebrate the work being done to strengthen Summit and Medina counties and recognize the people helping make that work possible.

Executive Shapiro also presented a proclamation declaring June 18, 2026, as United Way of Summit & Medina Day in Summit County. Thank you to United Way and all of the organizations, volunteers, and supporters who continue to invest in our community.

The work continued today. As part of Summit County's commitment to protecting older adults, Adult Protective Services hosted a second day of training for law enforcement officers and first responders. Participants explored the APS referral process, strategies for strengthening investigations, and ways agencies can work together to improve outcomes for older adults experiencing abuse, neglect, or exploitation.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and to our partners who remain committed to safeguarding some of our community's most vulnerable residents.

Summit County was honored to welcome a delegation of government, nonprofit, and civic leaders from Algeria, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, and South Africa through Global Ties Akron's U.S. State and Local Government Regional Project for Africa. 🌍

During their visit to OhioMeansJobs Summit County, participants toured the facility and met with representatives from our office to learn how county government supports public service delivery, economic development, public safety, communications, and regional collaboration. Discussions highlighted the important role local governments play in addressing community needs and working across jurisdictions to serve residents effectively.

We are grateful to Global Ties Akron for fostering these international exchanges and for the opportunity to share Summit County's work while learning from leaders from around the world.
