In the 1970's a national rank and file caucus was built across the United States within the union movement among organized workers. The TUAD national publication was known as Labor Today and was available at plant gates and union halls in the big manufacturing areas of this country. That changed when NAFTA came into existence, followed by other trade agreements and global schemes like the World Tr
ade Agreement and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. Manufacturing left the U.S. and there was a tremendous loss of good paying union jobs. The service sector and fast food industries grew and low wage non-union workers replaced the higher paid union industrial workers. There was "a race to the bottom" in the USA. Soon there were more non-union workers than union ones and union membership declined to roughly 13% of the workforce. There was massive unemployment and underemployment. There was a massive economic crisis not only in the United States, but throughout the world. Action is needed to reverse this economic assault on workers. The Labor United in Class Struggle caucus was formed among activists, both union and non-union to build a movement in defense of all workers. We believe it is not enough to focus on the union movement alone. We believe in "organizing the unorganized". We seek to unite all workers into a single nationwide labor caucus to defend their rights. Our newspaper is Labor Today, uniting the tactics of the old with the new realities.
