The Airway Heights Fire Department made its annual visit to the Early Childhood Education & Assistance Program (ECEAP). The kids are always excited to see the fire truck pull up and learn about the equipment the firefighters use, all while gaining important fire safety knowledge. Each child had the opportunity to climb through the fire truck and receive a firefighter's helmet.

The Airway Heights Fire Department welcomed seven new West Plains Fire Academy graduates during a special ceremony on Thursday, June 4, 2025. They make up one of the largest graduating classes in recent memory. Each will volunteer – something the department is always in need of as it faces ever-increasing calls for service.

“Without the volunteers, we would have low, low staffing,” said Schaefer. “That’s why we foot the bill for the recruits to go through the academy. We ask them to volunteer to help pay that cost.”

Each graduate not only completed the 16-week training academy but is also tested and received certifications in Hazmat Awareness and Operations, Firefighter 1, and Wildland Firefighting.

“A 16-week academy is a difficult feat to accomplish,” said Schaefer. “It's a long process with a lot of studying, so it’s really cool they get through it.”

Each recruit selected one person to pin on their new badge. Firefighters traditionally choose a loved one to honor the sacrifices their family makes to support them and to honor their lifelong oath to protect the community.

Welcome to our firefighting family, Jonas Bovey, Silas Dutton, Robert Roettger, McClain Chandler, Rakim Rasin, Matthew Van Tassel, and Madelyn Kubes. We are proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with you as we work together to protect our community.

Airway Heights firefighters joined with other area departments for Technical Rescue Team (TRT) training. A TRT is a specialized group of first responders trained to handle complex, high-risk emergencies outside standard firefighting.

Spokane County Fire District 10, Fairchild Air Force Base, and Fairchild AFB Fire Department hosted the event in coordination with the Airway Heights Fire Department, Spokane Fire, and Spokane Valley Fire.

In this drill, teams raced to rescue a pilot who had ejected from an aircraft and was stranded in a tree with a leg injury. Rescue team members climbed the tree, cleared limbs as needed, set a high-point anchor above the aviator, secured the patient in a rope system, and safely lowered the patient to the ground about 1 hour after arrival.

We’re grateful for the chance to improve our working relationships with other agencies so that we can be better prepared. Thank you to our area partners for their work, focus, and commitment.

Help us celebrate La Presa Mexican Restaurant - Airway Heights owner and chef Clint Hernandez and his 35th birthday.

Clint figured it was just another day at work, until the Airway Heights Police Department, the Airway Heights Fire Department, the Airway Heights Public Works Department, friends, family, and community members showed up to surprise him.

Happy birthday, Clint. Thank you not only for making sure our crews are well fed, but also for helping create a community built on commitment, safety, and unity.

Sunset Elementary students celebrated community and family support as they reached for their long-term goals at Career Spirit Day and Family Night.

“One of our missions this year is to chase greatness,” said third-grade teacher and co-organizer, Natalie Klawitter. Leaders are working to increase attendance and to help kids develop a scholar's mentality.

“Our attendance challenge was to dress as your future self,” Natalie explained. “One of my cute students came in a little Domino's outfit. He wants to be a Domino's delivery driver. We had kids come in police and firefighter outfits or dressed as a lineman or an electrician. We wanted to represent all types of different walks of life to encourage kids that school can lead you to your future.”

Students met adults from diverse fields, including the Airway Heights Fire Department, IT support, ecologists, painters, and librarians. Organizers set aside a special room for students interested in teaching and another for kids who dream of working in mathematical fields. They invited bankers, as well as occupational and physical therapists. Washington State University’s medical school explained what it takes to be in the health field.

“We want students to make the connection that you can chase and achieve greatness no matter your career path,” Natalie said. “It’s that scholar mentality. Kids are capable of anything if we can help put their minds to it and become excited about the future.”

We loved every second of Career Spirit Day. Cheney Public Schools and Sunset Elementary School thank you for sharing your students with us and helping them chase greatness.
